Two things important in Taekwondo

1. Balance
2. Concentration
Parts of the Feet
1. Ball of Foot
 The ankle should be pushed straight and the toes should be pulled back strongly so that the
ball of the foot can hit the target. (examples of kicks; front snap kick, scissor kick)
 Adjoint of finger
2. Instep
 Point your toes and foot towards the floor and keep the foot strong. The instep is the top part
of your foot mostly used when executing bandal chagi, (45 degree kick) and turning kick.
 Shoelace
3. Heel
 This can also be used for the majority of kicks when maximum damage wants to be caused.
Pull your foot and toes towards your shin and aim on the paddle or target with your heel.
Can be used for axe kick, reverse turning kick, hook kick, reverse hook kick and back kick.
 Likod
4. Blade of Foot
 This is the most difficult formation to try and perfect as it is not a natural angle of your foot.
The blade of your foot should be pushed over towards the target and your toes should be
curled back. Ensure that the sole of the foot is parallel with the floor. Used for side kick,
spin side kick and flying side kick.
5. Sole Of Foot
 This is the same basic formation as the instep but the contact is made with sole of the foot as
opposed to the instep. Examples of kicks that use the sole are; reverse turning kick, hook
kick, reverse hook kick and high rising kick.
 Likod

Low Kicks
 are generally used to target areas below the waist. Low kick targets include the knee, ankle,
calf, foot, etc. Low kicks are frequently used in self-defense situations and full contact
sparring matches (i.e. Mixed Martial Arts) because they are harder to block or grab.
 Most target: stomach, and chest.
 Should be at level area
3 Low Kicks
1. Front Kick (Ap Chagi)
 The Front Kick is sometimes referred to as the “snap kick,” because of the tremendous
speed exerted in this move. It is one of the first kicks taught in Taekwondo, but is often
considered as one of the most powerful even at higher levels. It is performed by raising
the knee of your kicking leg to the waist, then exerting force by exerting your foot
forward, straight towards the target. This move is designed to push the target back, as
well as injure them.
 Easy of all
 Intended Target: aimed at targets below the chest: stomach, thighs, groin, knees or
lower.
 Part of foot use: Instep, and ball of foot

2. 45 Degrees Kick
 Part of foot use: Instep
 Intended target: stomach
3. Spinning Kick
 Part of foot use: Sole

High Kick
 Intended target/s: face, head, and forehead
Axe Kick
 The Axe kick is also a relatively modern trend in competitive Taekwondo and other
martial arts competitions. To explain this move, think of how you would swing an axe to
cut a log. You first have to lift the axe up above the height of your body, then the axe
swings down onto the log, impacting it on a slight angle. The Axe kick works by raising
your leg up high towards the target, starting from outside the centerline. Once you have
performed the upwards kick as high as possible, you exert downward force with this leg,
and keeping the heel of the foot pointed downwards. The intended impact is basically
everything above the torso of the opponent, including the head, shoulders, and collar
bone.
 Part of foot use: Heel

Front Stretch Kick

 Instep
In – out Kick
 Intended target: Head
 Part of foot use: Sole
Out – In Kick
 Intended target: Head
 Part of foot use: Sole
