DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR LOGISTICS WAREHOUSE

A. Warehouse Layout Tips for Optimization


1. Tips for Designing Warehouse Layout
a. Map it Out – include everything from the doors to office spaces
b. Optimize Space – dedicate between 22% to 27% of warehouse space to
storage
c. Choosing Equipment – Aisles should be at least 12 -13 feet (3.66 – 3.96
meters) wide to accommodate forklifts and other equipment
2. Warehouse Layout Designs Suggestions
a. U-Shaped Design
The loading and shipping areas are next to each other, including reception
area behind unloading (delivery) area and picking (releasing) area behind
loading (distribution) area.
3. Effective Warehouse Layout Design Tips
a. Space Out the Unloading Area – dedicate space to prevent congestion
b. Separate the Reception Area – to have an efficient sorting and inspection
c. Organize the Storage Area – utilize every space, including vertical space
d. Create a Separate Picking (Releasing) Area – it should be next to storage for
easier access to items
e. Adjust the Loading Area – it should be separated from the rest for better
organization and traffic flow

B. Dimensions
1. Warehouse – L x W x H - 28 m x 7 m x 3 m (Minimum Basketball Court
Dimensions)
2. 10 – Wheeler Wing Van - L x W x H – 32 ft x 7.8 ft x 7.8 ft (9.8 m x 2.4 m x 2.4 m)
3. Forklift – L x W - 10 ft x 7 ft (3 m x 2.1 m)
4. Pallet – L x W – 48 in x 40 in (1.22 m x 1.02 m)
5. Kitchen – 3 square meters with a least dimension of 1.50 meters
6. Toilet and Bath – 1.20 square meters with at least dimensions of 0.90 meter
7. Window Openings – equal to at least 10 % of the floor area of room
8. Number of Exits – Every building or usable portion thereof shall have at least one
exit. In all occupancies, floor above the first storey having an occupant load of
more than 10 shall not have less than two exits.
9. Doors (Width and Height) – Every required exit doorway shall be of size as to
permit the installation of a door not less than 900 millimeters in width and not less
than 2 meters in height.
10. Circular Stairway – Circular stairs be used as an exit provided the minimum width
of run is not less than 250 millimeters.
11. Ventilators – When more than one ventilator is provided, they shall be so spaced
as to provide proper exhaust ventilation. Ventilators shall not be required for
enclosed platforms having a floor area of 45 square meters or less.
