The word statistics is derived from the Latin word “status” or the Italian word “statista,”
and meaning of these words is “political state” or “government.” Shakespeare used the
word statist is his drama Hamlet (1602). In the past, statistics was used by rulers.

Application of Statistics
Statistics help in providing data as well as tools to analyze the data. Some powerful
techniques are index numbers, time series analysis, and also forecasting. These are
immensely useful in the analysis of data in economic planning. Further, statistical
techniques help in framing planning models too.
