Sample - Unit 3 / LA A

Learner sample for U3

If there was an incident in the workshop which caused a fire because something was heating up to
much, a fire alarm would go off.

Sensors are set to detect levels of heat or smoke that could be a fire and the fire alarm system will
be set off automatically but it can be done by hand if someone sees something first. A loud bell or a
siren goes off to tell everyone there is a problem that might be a fire. Sometimes there are also
flashing lights for people who can’t hear.

The alarm is a sound that goes on and doesn’t stop, and it sounds different to the one when it’s
break time or dinner. Because we are in the Tech Block which is away from the rest of the school, it
could just sound in here and we would would go out on our own and the teachers take the registers.

As soon as the fire bell goes off the person in the school office will tell the Fire Brigade and they will
be on their way.

These are the different types of fire extinguishers there are:

The only ones in the workshops are the blue and red ones. It looks like the red water one is for the
basics like wood or paper or if someone sets their clothes on fire and if anything else sets on fire you
use the blue one. It says around the fire extinguishers that you should only use them if it won’t put
you at risk, but our teacher has just said if there is a fire to tell him or the technician and to go out to
the meeting point as the alarm will be going anyway. If someone has had a bad accident becuse of
the fire and can’t be moved then you would need to try to put it out so you can sort them out. If a
machine set on fire you need make sure everyone near it is okay and safe first and then try to put
the fire out as it might spread to other machines.

The teachers are basically fire wardens who tell you where to go and they might have yellow jackets
on. The Evacuation procedure is pretty simple if there is a fire and the alarm goes off:

• Put everything down and switch everything off if you are using equipment. Don’t collect
coats and bags as this will take more time

• Walk to the nearest door to leave the building, and if this door is blocked by the fire go to
the next nearest. You can use emergency exits, like the ones upstairs where there are stairs
down the outside of the block.

• Line up at the fire alarm number for your form in the school yard and the register will be
taken

• Don’t go back in till the Fire Brigade say its okay

If someone got hurt because of the fire you could do different things, but if it was just a small burn
they need to do the same as everyone else then get it looked at by the First Aider. We know who the
First Aiders in the Tech Block are as their names are written on signs like this and the first aid boxes
are next to their names in the workshops.

If someone has had a bad accident becuse of the fire and can’t be moved then the teacher or
technician would need to try to put it out with an extinguisher so they can be sorted out. When this
happens the person putting the fire out and the first aider can stay with the hurt person but
everyone else gets out.

After a fire the school will need to do a review to see if all the procedures worked properly and if
anything needs to be changed, like what caused the fire, did everyone get out quick enough or are
more doors needed but what they need to do depends on what happened but any change needs to
be written down and everyone has to practice it sometimes as this is a legal requirement.
