CAPSTONE RESEARCH
MARCH 2018
INTRODUCTION
Smell plays a huge role for satisfaction, taste of enjoyment and attracting partners
through perfumes. Perfumes may have nice soothing scents however; according to The U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), commercial fragrances
may consist of synthetic chemicals that are manufactured in the laboratory such as acetyl, benzyl
alcohol, limonene, acetone, and ethanol, that are toxic and can cause different side effects like
nausea, headaches and allergies to the consumer. Generally, these harmful chemicals not just
only affect a health of an individual but the environment as well. That is why the researchers
came up with an idea of creating an ideal perfume that everyone can use considering all aspects.
The researchers made a perfume named “The Classic” by using Calamansi and
Sampaguita as the main component. Calamansi and Sampaguita has been used as it is easily
cultivated here in the Philippines and the researchers believes that the fresh and citrusy smell can
be a compliment mixture with sweet and mellow fragrance. And, Calamansi and Sampaguita are
suitable compound for a perfume because they have these properties that eliminates bad smell
and can be used as a freshener. The perfume was consisting of the extracted calamansi and
sampaguita which become essential and carrier oil respectively, that has been mix with alcohol
as the base compound. These materials are all organic that is why it is chemical free and at the
same time affordable. The organic perfume can be a solution for the problem as it is beneficial in
The following are the objectives that the researchers want to aim at the end of this study:
commercial perfumes
Rationale
This capstone project is highly beneficial because it addresses problems in health and
contributes to the economy of the country by producing organic perfume. Organic perfume is
beneficial and ideal for every individual who have conditions like skin allergies, asthma,
headache, and other health problems, because it contains natural components that will keep the
individual away from dangers. This capstone project is also significant to the environment
because the World Health Organization (2016) reports that 92% of the world, breathes polluted
air and more than two million premature deaths each year have been recorded. And one of the
sources that penetrate air pollution is the chemical and synthetic component of commercial
perfume like benzyl, etc., as these chemicals are said to spread and evaporate into air, that is why
if the organic perfume was accepted and used, it can prevent and lessen the air pollution in the
environment and the good quality of air can be achieved. Lastly, is its impact in the economic
aspect, commercial perfumes have abundantly patronized by perfume users everywhere, but of
course the only one that can highly benefit in terms of economic growth are countries that mainly
manufacture perfumes like France, Italy, etc., comparing to what researchers did that was natural
perfume which its component are easily cultivated in the Philippines. By means of that, GDP
will increase and the economy of the Philippine will benefit, because according Bureau of
Economic Analysis (2017), Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is one of the main indicators used to
determine the health of a country's economy. It will also become advantageous in the part of
farmers and vendors in the Philippines, as the production will increase as well as its sales.

conducted. First, the researchers created an infomercial, which contains promotion about the
perfume that was named as “The Classic” and also information on how the perfume was created.
The said commercial was about a minute long but it was brief and concise. Since the commercial
is too short the researchers also prepared a poster that contains the summarized version of the
research study and the researchers conducted a short discussion regarding the perfume. After the
discussion the researchers allotted time for a short “question and answer” portion for the
audiences regarding the infomercial or the discussion. The researchers also brought the perfume
prototypes and let the target audiences to test and smell if they wanted to. By testing and
smelling the perfume, the audiences were able to answer the feedback forms that were given to
them. The researchers also prepared some bookmarks that were shaped like a perfume and the
said bookmarks contain short information regarding “The Classic” perfume. The researchers
thought of making bookmarks instead of flyers, as it can be very useful especially to those who
love to read. The bookmark is not only beneficial to the researchers by means of promotion; it is

On Figure 2, the researchers were showing the final output that will give the students
relevant and essential information about the research. These final outputs were made to promote
the research and to disseminate important information to help the students and other people
the students can really see and smell the perfume and test if it smells good or bad. Bringing the
perfumes resulted to good outcomes because the students already have a basis in answering the
feedback form.

from the video and the further explanation of the researchers. Disseminating the information is
very important especially for a research that needs more clarification. For the second question on
Table 1, 68 out of 104 said that the Calamansi and Sampaguita is effective as a perfume.
However, 57 out of 104 said that the perfume is not considered to be use by the students.
Part of the feedback form is the question, “What are your thoughts about the perfume
made from Calamansi and Sampaguita?”, althought not showed in Table 1, the opinions from the
students is cut into good and bad feedbacks. The researchers brought 2 sample perfumes for the
students or the respondents to smell it. The perfumes brought were Perfume B or the Perfume
that has more Calamansi carrier oil and Perfume C, which is the perfume that has more Samguita
essential oil. There were mixed comments about the perfume, most of them were confused and
shocked because it is unusual to combine Sampaguita and Calamansi in perfume making. Some
said that the perfume made with Calamansi and Sampaguita is interesting and innovative because
it’s quite unique and it was something new for the students. Some students also said that it has
the potential and can still be improved. The researchers agreed to this opinion because materials
and facilities were limited when the perfume was made. Lastly, the scent is unexpected because
it has a unique scent among other perfumes available. Some students even suggested that it could
also be used as an air freshener. However, there are also students who thought that the perfume is
weird which is connected to other students’ comment that it still lacks other component for the
Calamansi and Sampaguita to be called a perfume. Based on the results, the researchers can
conclude that the perfume is still effective but can still be improved. If this output plan has been
justified, then the researchers can be able to gather materials that could improve the scent of the
perfume.
