ABSTRACT

Homemade akapulko ointment is a traditional medicine for fungal

infection specifically tinea versicolor. This study aimed to produce ointment as

an alternative treatment for the said fungal infection. The active ingredient in

akapulko for treating fungal infection is chrysophanic acid that can be

extracted from akapulko leaves. The akapulko ointment was made from

washed fresh akapulko leaves, fried cooking oil and mixed with white candle

wax and when cooled, stored in clean container. This study consists of 15

persons with at least 13 years old (female or male). The respondents did not

use any other medications for their skin problem while applying akapulko

ointment. This medication applied within 0-6 weeks, the effectivity of akapulko

ointment fully treated the tinea versicolor of most of the respondents within 0-

2 weeks but the appropriate skin type of a respondent to gain full treatment of

akapulko ointment is oily type of skin.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Tinea versicolor is rampant among Filipinos. The warm tropical climate of the

Philippines and its interaction with cultural practices, occupation and immune

responsiveness contribute to the increased suspectibility of Filipinos to fungal

infections. An investigation to determine the prevalence of fungal infections in

dermatology training instiutions over 4-years period was conducted. The results

showed that tinea versicolor (25. 34%) of the people in the Philippines have tinea

versicolor (Nippon Ishinkin Gakkai Zasshi, 2005).

Tinea versicolor can lose self esteem of humans in which it can cause low

socialization or interaction with other people around them.

Cassia alata, also known as Senna alata and Cassia herpectica, among other

scientific names, and commonly called seven golden candlesticks, candle bush,

gelenggang (Malay), akapulko (Filipino) or asunting ( Bisayan ) , was introduced

from the Americas to other tropical areas in the world. Its buds are likened to fat

candles because of their column like appearance, with their red tips resembling

flames. Its leaves, which fold together at night, are bilateral and symmetrically

opposed. Because of its adaptability, it has come to be considered a weed. Akapulko

leaves contain chrysophanic acid, a fungicide that is used to treat such infections as

ringworm and athlete's foot.

‘Akapulko’ is one of the medicinally important plants in the Philippines. It has

been used to cure poisonous bites and venereal eruptions. The leaves are

antiherpetic, purgative, and cure for ringworm and other skin diseases. The bioactive

substances in ‘akapulko’ include chrysophanic acid and tannin found in the leaves

and oxymethyl anthraquinone in fruits. This species is widespread in the Philippines

in disturbed areas in low and middle altitudes. It is also cultivated for its ornamental

and medicinal properties.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Akapulko is widely used in the Philippines as one of the herbal medicines.

Akapulko is a shrub that normally grows wild in a tropical climate like the Philippines.

It is commonly found in areas along the river side, streams, and lakes. It’s leaves

contain chrysophanic acid, a fungicide that is used to treat fungal infections.

Akapulko contains antifungal properties that can help to treat wounds and skin

diseases. (Philippine Medical Plant, 2016)

Akapulko has methanolic extract from leaves, flowers, stem and roots that

had been shown to have a broad spectrum of anti-bacterial activity after fractionating

with petroleum spirit, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate. (Philippine Medicinal

Plant)

Senna alata (akapulko) is a well known plant in the world including tropical

regions of Africa, Southeast Asia, Pacific Island and America. The researchers found

out the characteristics of Senna Alata, its height measures up to 30 feet in its native

habitat although, 5 to 8 feet is more typical in a backyard garden with a spread

approximately half that width.

Propagating the plant by growing seeds, Senna alata which may be sold

under the plants various alternate names including candle bush, candle free,

candelabra bush, Christmas candle, empress candle, golden candlestick, popcorn

senna and ringworm tree. (Bonnie Singleton)

In making akapulko ointment there are two processes, cold and hot process.

Both produce standard ointments and are easy to perform. They differ from one

another in more ways than just the temperature. (Traditional Medicine and Healing:

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS,

AND

LIST OF REFERENCES

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The respondents agreed that the akapulko ointment is effective in treating

tinea versicolor.

The effectivity of akapulko ointment will be felt within 0-2 weeks. Most of the

respondents states that it’s full effectivity will be experience within 0-2 weeks while

some of them said that it will effect fully within 3-4 weeks.

On the other hand, regarding to the odor and texture of the akapulko

ointment, we the researchers already expected that the response of our selected

respondents about the odor of akapulko ointment is not excellent yet their response

were most satisfactory. The odor of akapulko ointment is not totally excellent it’s

because of the akapulko leaves in which we already know that it’s odor is not totally

good. In the texture of akapulko ointment most of our respondents said that it is very

excellent and comfortable when applied to the skin.

CONCLUSION

The researchers concluded that the effectivity of the akapulko ointment will be

felt 0-5 weeks from the beginning of usage and 3-4 weeks to experience full

treatment of akapulko ointment. The odor is not totally good yet it’s very comfortable

when applied on the skin.

In general, the researchers therefore conclude that the Senna Alata

(Akapulko) ointment is an effective medication in treating tinea versicolor regarding

to the results and findings gathered from the respondents.
