Objectives:
At the end of the lesson discussion, the students are expected to:

1. Understand how the four pillars of learning was developed


2. Apply the four pillars of education in different learning experiences.
3. Design and implement instructional activities that are based on four pillar of education

Introduction
“Learning the Treasure Within”, the report of the International Commission on Education for
the Twenty-first Century, chaired by Jacques Delors, and published by UNESCO in 1996
provides new insights into education for the 21st Century. It stresses that each individual must be
equipped to seize learning opportunities throughout life, both to broaden her/his knowledge, skills
and attitudes, and adopt to a changing, complex and inter dependent world. This is referred to as
“lifelong learning.

developed all our talents to the full and to realized our creative potential, including responsibility
for own life and achievement of personal aims.

The Four Pillars of Education

1.1. Learning to Know


involves the acquisition and development of knowledge and skills that are needed to
function in the world. This skills or learning tools include: Literacy , Numeracy and
Critical thinking

Example: Brainstorming ideas for an essay, solving math and sciences and using your
critical thinking skills to study for an exam

1.2. Learning to Do
Involves the acquisition of skills that would enable individuals to effectively
participate in the global economy and society. These skills are often linked to occupational
success, such as: Vocational and technical, Apprenticeships and Leadership and
management competencies

Example: NSTP activities like leadership trainings also being a student volunteers

1.3. Learning to live together


Involves the development of social skills and values such as respect and concern for
others, social and inter-personal skills and an appreciation of the diversity among people.
This skills would enable individuals and societies to live in a peace of harmony.

Example: Buwan ng Wika Celebration : Students are allow to wear national costume.
There are also activities regarding to how different culture exist.

1.4. Learning to be
Involves activities that promote holistic personal development ( body, mind and spirit),
for an all-round complete person. These include cultivating one’s self analytical and socials skills,
creativity, personal discovery and an appreciation of the inherent value provided by these
pursuits.

Example: A teacher who participates in training workshops that will enhance hi/her
knowledge and skills in the teaching learning process.
