INTRODUCTION

What is following instructions? How important it is for students

to follow instructions as we enter the so called “New Normal”,

student needs to study at home with their learning kit. The students

need to understand each direction given to them from the module,

parents and teachers. Are they any consequences if students don’t

follow? As they say first school is from our home and first teacher is

our parent. Parents instruct their children to do things in their home

like “Put the plate in the table” and at the school, teacher will
command the students within the classroom like “Get your bag and

bring out your notebook.” Within their peer there are encounter to

follow instructions like “Put my doll on the table”.

It is important to the children to follow instruction, because

this can be measure if the students have the ability to comprehend.

Some children have struggles with this simple following direction.

These are the indicators that the children have difficulties in

following instruction. First, if the students fail to follow the simple

command and misinterpret information. They look at you blankly

when you give directions. Children have difficulties in following two

longer command and must be repeated the instruction.

According to Miller, S., Church, E., and Poole, C., author of the

article “Ages and Stages: Learning to Following Instruction”, as the

children turn 18 months old, thinking skills begin to develop.

Children understand more words and visualize things. When they

turn in 24 months the children can follow two- and three-instruction

like “Please get your doll and blanket and put them in your cubby”.

By the age of three, preschoolers have understood vocabulary of a

little over 1, 000 words but children at this age have developed their

comprehension. Listening is the skill must develop to follow

direction. Listening is receiving language through the ears. It

involves identifying the sounds of speech and processing them into

words and sentences. Students should have this skill but also with

comprehension. Listening comprehension isn’t just hearing what is

said—it is the ability to understand the words and relate to them in

some way.

Comprehension is the ability to understand about something.

Example is how the students able to understand difficult math

problem. When does the child begin to understand the word? When

the babies are in the womb of their mother, they learn to

understand what people say and doing. The babies don’t know the

meaning but they can recognize by the voice of their parents. Few

months later, they can develop to understand your gesture by love,

concern, anxiety or anger. When they reach the age of 7 months old,

they used hand gesture and other sign using their body that have

meaning. For example is by lifting their hand to signal that they want

to be picked up. As the babies reach the age of 9 months, they are

able to respond when their name are being called. When the babies

are about 12 to 15 months they can understand simple instructions

like “stop” and “come to your mommy.” And at the age of 3 years

old, they have seven hundred vocabularies and will understand

many more.

As a grade 2 teacher, some students of Grade 2 Graciano Lopez

Jaena have the difficulties in following simple instruction. Some

can’t understand the command or they just look at you with a

question mark on their face. Teacher tends to find the simple way to

make a simple direction for them to understand what they should

do to the activity given to them.

The purpose of this study is to ratify the reading understanding

of Grade 2 students of Graciano Lopez Jaena with the direction

given to them.
