The Covid-19 pandemic is hitting the poor the hardest and exposing the gaping
inequities in access to food, shelter, and health care. People who live in congested
settlements with low-quality services, which would significantly increase their risk of being
infected by the contagion. The first case of COVID-19 infection in the country was reported
in January 2020, and by March, the country was placed under strict community quarantine
that restricted mobility and business activities. Authorities advised that we all steer clear of
large gatherings, avoid using public transportation, follow community quarantine measures,
and seek prompt medical attention when there is exposure to the disease. While all these
are sound reminders, there is one glaring problem the poor will not be able to afford to
follow these. Yes these community quarantine measures have slowed the community
spread of COVID-19, but it will arise a significant adverse impacts on family incomes, jobs,
education of children, food security, and businesses. However, there are actions that can be
taken to help low-income families. First it is important to work with poor communities to
strengthen communications on hygiene and health promotion. Next is that local
governments, community groups, and the private sector can join forces and form a local
network that could support poorest families in obtaining accurate and useful information on
COVID-19, as well as provide free and immediate testing, quarantine and medical
assistance for suspected cases.
