ACTIVITY 08
Describing the types of networks the wired and wireless connections
- Wired connection uses cables to connect devices, such as laptop or desktop
computers to the Internet or other network.
- Wireless connection allows devices to stay connected to the network but roam
untethered to any wires.

Test 1. Fill in the blanks. Provide the information ask in the table by searching in the
internet.
Instruction(s): Search 10 different devices that uses wired and wireless connection 5 for
wire and 5 for wireless.

Devices Connection Explanation Why Device Image

Name Type (Wired or Wireless)
(Wire or
Wireless)
1. Long-Range Wireless Long-range wireless
Wireless power could eventually
Power eliminate power cables
from desktop devices
such as laptops,
monitors and even
kitchen appliances.
2.Wireless Wireless A wireless router is a
Router device that accepts
and incoming internet
connection and sends
data as RF signals to
other wireless devices
that are near the
router.
3.Wireless Wireless Wireless adapters are
Adapters for hardware devices
PC installed inside
computers that enable
wireless connectivity.

4. Wireless Wireless A wireless repeater is a
Repeater wireless networking
device that is used to
extend the range of a
router. A repeater
receives wireless
signals and the re-
emits them with
increased strength.
5. Wireless Wireless Cellular and cordless
Phones phones are two more
examples of device
that make use of
wireless signals.
Cordless phones have
a limited range, but cell
phones typically have a
much large4r range
than local wireless
networks, since cell
phones providers use
large
telecommunication
towers to provide cell
phone coverage.
6. Hub Wire Hubs connect multiple
computer networking
devices together. A
hub also acts as
repeater in that it
amplifies signals that
deteriorate after
travelling long distance
over connecting
cables. A hub is the
simplest in the family of
network connecting
devices because it
connects LAN
components with
identical protocols.

7. Bridge Wire Bridges are used to
connect two or more
hosts or networks
segments together.
The basic role of
bridges in networks
architecture is storing
and forwarding frames
between the different
segments that the
bridge connects.
8. Gateway Wire Gateways normally
work at the transport
and session layers of
the OSI model. At the
transport layer and
above, there are
numerous protocols
and standards from
different vendors;
gateways are used to
deal with them.
I9. Modem Wire Modems (modulators-
demodulators) are
used to transmit digital
signals over analog
telephone lines, thus,
digital signals are
converted by the
modem into analog
signals of different
frequencies and
transmitted to a
modem at the receiving
location. The receiving
modem performs the
reverse transformation
and provides a digital
output to a device
connected to a modem,
usually a computer.

10. Repeater Wire A repeater is an
electronic device that
amplifies the signal it
receives. You can think
of repeater as a device
which receives a signal
and transmits it at a
higher level or higher
power so that the
signal can cover longer
distances, more than
100 meters for
standard LAN cables.
Repeaters work on the
Physical layer.

Test 2. Fill in the blanks. Provide the correct UTP cable color coding for STRAIGHT
THROUGH and CROSSOVER. These cables are used in the WIRED Connections.

FEEDBACK FOR MODULE 2.2

1. How network cables being categorize in terms of its speed?

Networking cables are networking hardware used to connect one network device to other
network devices or to connect two or more computers to share printers, scanners etc. Different
types of network cables, such as coaxial cable, optical fiber cable, and twisted pair cables, are
used depending on the network's physical layer, topology, and size. The devices can be separated
by a few meters or nearly unlimited distances like via the interconnections of the Internet.

There are several technologies used for network connections. Patch cables are used for
short distances in offices and wiring closets. Electrical connections using twisted pair or coaxial
cable are used within a building. Optical fiber cable is used for long distances or for applications
requiring high bandwidth or electrical isolation. Many installations use structured cabling
practices to improve reliability and maintainability. In some home and industrial applications
power lines are used as network cabling.

REFLECTION FOR ACTIVITY 08

1. Comparing the wired and wireless connection, which is the fastest of them? Site
examples. Why?

Wired networks are generally much faster than wireless networks. This is mainly because

a separate cable is used to connect each device to the network with each cable transmitting
data at the same speed. A wired network is also faster since it never is weighed down by
unexpected or unnecessary traffic.
