Laptop
A laptop is a computer designed for
portability. As such laptops are designed
for low power consumption and are most
often used when space is limited, such as
on an airplane. Laptops are used in a
variety of settings, such as at work, in
education, for playing games, web
browsing, for personal multimedia, and
general home computer use.
Pg. 2
Tablet
A tablet is a wireless touch screen personal
computer (PC) that is smaller than a
notebook but larger than a smartphone.
Tablets can be used to browse the Internet,
check email, download and read books, play
games, watch videos, organize content, and
much more.
Walkie talkie
A walkie-talkie is a half-duplex communication device.
Walkie talkies are still widely used in various organisations and industries where
instantaneous and group communication is required. These include
the emergency services, security services, the military and transportation
industries.
Telephone
Modem
Modem is any of a class of electronic devices that
convert digital data signals into modulated analog
signals suitable for transmission over analog
telecommunications circuits. A modem transforms
digital information from your computer into analog
signals that can transmit over wires, and it can translate
incoming analog signals back into digital data.
Switch
A switch is a network hardware device that
allows communication between devices
within a network, such as your local home
network. The switches connect several
network devices, such as computers, to allow
communication between them.
Pg.4
Router
A router is a hardware device that routes data from
a local area network to another network
connection. A router receives and sends data on
computer networks.
Hub
A hub is the connection point in a computer device
where data from many directions converge and are
then sent out in many directions to respective
devices. A hub may also act as a switch by preventing
specific data packets from proceeding to a
destination. They are generally used to connect
computers in a LAN. A hub has many ports in it. A
computer which intends to be connected to the
network is plugged in to one of these.
Pg. 5
Twisted Pair
Twisted pair is the ordinary copper wire that connects home and business
computers to the telephone company. To reduce crosstalk or electromagnetic
induction between pairs of wires, two insulated copper wires are twisted around
each other. Each connection on twisted pair requires both wires.
Coaxial cable
Coaxial cable is a common type of cable
used for transmitting data over long
distances. It can carry either an analog
or digital signal. While coax cables have
many applications, they are most
commonly used to transmit cable TV
and Internet signals.
Fibre Optic
Fiber optics is the technology used to transmit
information as pulses of light through strands of
fiber made of glass or plastic over long
distances. Optical fibers are about the diameter
of a strand of human hair and when bundled into
a fiber-optic cable, they’re capable of
transmitting more data over longer distances
and faster than other mediums.
Pg.6
Infra- Red
Infrared (IR), sometimes called infrared
light, is electromagnetic radiation (EMR)
with wavelengths longer than those of
visible light. It is therefore invisible to the
human eye. The most common use of
infrared in everyday life is remote controls. These work by sending pulses of
infrared that spell out a message to an electronic device.
Microwave
Microwave is a line-of-sight wireless communication
technology that uses high frequency beams of radio
waves to provide high speed wireless connections
that can send and receive voice, video, and data
information. Microwave links are widely used for
point-to-point communications.
Radio wave
Radio waves are a type of
electromagnetic radiation with
wavelengths in the electromagnetic
spectrum longer than infrared light.
Radio waves are used for wireless
transmission of sound messages, or
information, for communication, as well
as for maritime and aircraft navigation.
