SIGHT DISTANCE

Passing Sight Distance When S<L

Safe stopping distance = d + D

Where:
S = Stopping sight distance
t = perception-reaction time in seconds
V = velocity of vehicle in meter per second
f = coefficient of friction between tire and
pavement
G = grade line of road

Length of Curve when S<L

√ √

When the computed value is grater the stopping sight distance use this L above
If not

√ √

Example:

1. A 3% grade intersects a -2% grade at sta. 1+ 000 elevation 200. Design a vertical
summit parabolic curve connecting two tangent grades to conform safe
stopping sight distance specification.
- Design velocity = 50 kph
- Height of drive’s eye from road pavement is 1.64m
- Height of an object over the road pavement is 0.16
- Coefficient of friction between the road pavement and tire is 0.20 m
- Perception time to reaction time is 3.5 sec.
