Tunica k, m, n, p, s, and t, respectively, as
te' ni .
12) It would appear that in taking over the word tricoter as ko'tiy the
Tunica dropped the first syllable, and this could be explained on the
basis of the fact that Tunica verb stems rarely have more than two
syllables. (The word te' suni has a special explanation, given below.) On
the other hand, it is also possible that the local French pronunciation
of tricoter is 'coter. Since I did not record the local French term, I do not
know which explanation is the true one.
13) Certain changes are at present unexplainable, viz., the addition
of the h in su'hpi < souper and the loss of the second t in tinter , which
was taken over as te' ni.
14) The most interesting change that has taken place is the morpho-
logical treatment accorded to the word te1 suni. Since most Tunica verb
stems are disyllabic, te'suni has been interpreted as a verb stem
te' su + -ni y a causative suffix. The causative suffix is regularly used in
the infinitive and some other morphological forms of causative verbs.
But certain other morphological situations regularly call for the use of
a paradigmatic form of the causative auxiliary -?u'ta and in these situ-
ations the causative suffix -ni must be dropped. Therefore a paradig-
matic form like te's?utay" he ate breakfast" ( Cte'su + -^u'ta) shows that
te'suniy despite its French origin, has been completely adapted to the
morphological structure of Tunica. Note that./*'»/, "to ring," and
ti' ni y "to dine," are not treated as causative verbs, because they have
only two syllables, and it is therefore not necessary to interpret -ni as a
suffix whenfitting these stems into the normal stem patterns of Tunica.

E che l'eletta ella [Brad.] de l'arme dona
Senza mirar chi sia di lor, che chiede.
E lo potea ben far, perch' era buona
Con tutte l'arme, o sia a cavallo o a piede.6
6 Buono sembra avere lo stesso senso in XXXI, 98: "Dicendo: 'Senza voi dunque noni sono / A
chi m'oltraggia per risponder buono?' " (dove però si potrebbe anche pensare al senso di 'capace,
atto a': cf. Ital. mod. buono a niente ecc.). Inoltre migliori in XXXI, 56 significa evidentemente
'più valenti,' e si oppone chiaramente al più rei del v. 4 della stessa stanza (glosato con 'inferiori,
meno valenti' da G. Campari, ediz. Hoepli [Milano, 191 5], p. 569, e con 'peggiori, meno valorosi'
da P. Papini). In antico Italiano (e ancora in Ariosto) reo> río significan 'cattivo,' cioè l'opposto
di 'buono'; e se buono significava 'valente,' rio significava 'vile, codardo, inetto alle armi'; cf.
anche il passo XXXII, 4 (citato nel testo) dove buono 'valente' è opposto a tristo 'vile, inetto alla
guerra' (tristo in Italiano antico, e in parte anche in Italiano moderno, è l'opposto di buono: i buoni
e i tristi).
7 Traggo i passi del Caro da Tommaseo-Bellini (che pero non glosa), s. v. buono ; in I, 312 (che
traduce 1, 195) e in XI, 156 (che traduce XI, 106) già il testo latino à bonus; invece in I, 356 (che
traduce 1, 222), il testo latino k/ortis.
