1 An incompressible liquid A with volumetric flowrate of F1 (m3/s) at T1 (K) is

. preheated in vessel V-101 until temperature of T2 (K) using hot oil entering the
heating coil at temperature Toil,i and exiting with temperature Toil,f. The liquid A
having density of ρA1 (kg/m3) and molar concentration of CA1 (mol/m3). The
stream is then fed continuously to first CSTR (R-101) where it reacted with
species B (in excess) with pre-exponential factor of A1 (m3/mol.s) and activation
energy of E1 (J/mol) to form intermediate product C as follow:

𝑘1
𝐴 + 𝐵 → 2𝐶

The reaction is exothermic with heat of reaction is ΔHRX,1 (kJ/mol). The

temperature inside R-101 is controlled by using chilled water entering the
cooling jacket at temperature TCW,i and exiting with temperature TCW,f. The
jacket having overall heat transfer coefficient of UJ, and heat transfer area of
AJ.

The outlet of R-101 is then fed into the second CSTR (R-102). In the R-102, the
intermediate product C reacts with species D (in excess) to form the final
product E with pre-exponential factor of A2 ((m3/mol)2s-1) and activation energy
of E2 (J/mol) as follow:

𝑘2
𝐶 + 2𝐷 → 2𝐸

The reaction is endothermic with heat of reaction is ΔHRX,2 (kJ/mol). The

temperature inside R-102 is controlled by using high pressure steam entering
the heating mantle at temperature TS,i and exiting with temperature TS,f. The
heating mantle having overall heat transfer coefficient of UH, and heat transfer
area of AH.

The volume for V-101, R-101 and R-102 are V1, V2 and V3, respectively. The
simplified process flow diagram (PFD) of the process with additional information
is illustrated in Figure 1.

The change in density and heat capacity throughout the process are relatively
small and can be assumed constant. By providing appropriate assumption(s),

a. develop mathematical model(s) that represent the change in height over

time for preheater V-101. Assuming the preheater is a cylinder with
diameter of D (m).
[5 marks]

b. develop mathematical model(s) that represent the change in

temperature in reactor R-101 over time. Assume that the chilled water
temperature inside the jacket is equal to its exiting temperature, TCW,f.
[10 marks]

c. considering your system is a combination of R-101 and R-102, develop

mathematical model(s) that represent the change in molar concentration
over time of intermediate C and final product E. Assume both reactions
are elementary.
