TEST 1
04.07.2020 DURATION: 60 min.

ANSWER ALLTHE QUESTIONS

1. A flash separator shown in FIGURE Q1 is used in a gas conditioning plant for

separating CO2 from natural gas. The pressures inside the tank, p, and the liquid level,
h, should be maintained at their respective desired operating conditions. The variables
qF, TF and pF are the feed flow rate, temperature and pressure, respectively.

FIGURE Q1

a. Identify and state the control problems.

c. Sketch feedback control strategies using schematic diagram that can address
the control objectives.

2. A perfectly stirred, constant-volume tank has two input streams, both consisting of the
same liquid as shown in FIGURE Q2. While wi, the mass flow rates of all streams can
be assumed constant, the temperature, Ti, of each of the streams vary with time.

FIQURE Q2

a. Derive a dynamic model that describes the transient operation of the tank.

b. Derive a transfer function model that relates the outlet temperature, T3, to inlet
temperatures T1 and T2.

3. A chemical process unit exhibits an underdamped second order behavior as given by
the transfer function:
𝑌(𝑠) 18
= 2
𝑈(𝑠) 𝑠 + 3𝑠 + 9

a. Calculate the process gain, natural period of oscillation and damping factor for
the system.
