FOLKDANCE
1.TINIKLING
HISTORY
Tinikling is a traditional Philippine
folk dance which began in the colonial era of
Spain. Two people beat, tap and slip bamboo
posts on the ground and against each other
in coordination with one or more dancers
who move between and across posts. The
dance includes two people. The music is
customarily transferred to Rondalla, a sort of
serenade played by a rebellious outfit which
started in Spain in the middle of the Center
Ages.
The Tinikling was born in the Visayas on the islands of Leyte, the oldest of Philippine dances.

Traditionally people started to work in Tinikling on the paddies and farms of the Philippines. After the

invasion of the Philippines, the Spanish were sent to haciendas (plantation, mining or factories) and lost

ownership. For almost 400 years (1500-1898), Indigenous peoples worked in fields and paddies all day to

appease the King of Spain.
