Preface
Welcome to our friends, students, reader, researchers, and those who want to
find out more about our documents. We are very happy to submit the research
work of Professor Voeng Sokhkhan to give us this research work for research to
expand knowledge and experience in the future. And we have researched and
compiled this book.
This book only explains a few of issues that I have researched in the past and
some references in Internet libraries and other places. We hope that this book
will be a basis for researching the details as well. And this document only
shows some methods.
Finally, we look forward to receiving criticism from readers, researchers,
teachers, professors, peers and the younger generation for any inadvertent
errors in words, phrases, grammar, and alphabet, to help improve the book.
This is the better and more accurate.
Finally, we wish our reader, researchers, teachers, professors and students all
the blessings, good luck at all times and achieve the goals that everyone
aspires to.

Listening skills
Listening for sequence of events
Listening skills
Listening skills are the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages
in the communication process. Listening skill is key to all effective
communication. Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily
misunderstood.
if there is one communication skill you should aim to master, then listening
is it.
Listening is a really important skill and there are lot of activities we can do
in class to help develop this ability which do not require a formal listening
practice set up (CDs, videos, etc…). Of course, having regular listening in
class is great but we also combine this with listening to the teacher and
follow students.
Listening for a sequence. Quite often, students receive instructions in
English, information they will need to act on or orders they will need to
listening with a purpose 7 Types of ESL Activities - Busy teacher
➢ Type 1 : Listening for the Main idea

Sequence
Sequence is one of many skills that contribute to students’ ability to
comprehend what they read.

1
Sequence refers to the identification of the components of story- the
beginning, middle, and end- and to the ability to retell the events within a
given text in the order in which they occurred. The ability to sequence
events in a text is a key comprehension strategy, especially for narrative
texts. Sequence is also an important component of problem – solving across
subjects.

Listening for a Sequence of events

Listening for a Sequence of events quite often, students receive instruction
in English, information they will need to act on orders they will need to
follow. It is vital that they understand the Sequence correctly and what
each step entails.

Example
Listening for Sequence of events in Fiction
As you listen to the following story, be sure to keep your ears open for
time order words

First, I woke up and looked out my window. Snow was coming down in
buckets! Next, I brushed down the stairs to ask my mom if school was
cancelled. I shouted ‘Hooray’! After mom told me, there was no school
today. After breakfast, my brother and I put our snowsuits on. Then, we
raced outside to have a snowball fight. Before we went inside, we built an
enormous snowman! Finally, we went inside and sipped hot chocolate by
the fireplace. This was a terrific snow day!

Listening for certainty
Certainty is the state of being completely confident or having no doubt
about something. However, uncertainty is when nothing is ever decided or
sure.
Listening for certainty is the key to better English speaking. The more real
English phrases and expressions you listen to, the more fluent you will
become, to be sure.

Example
Listen to Amanda and Rebecca (A) and (R)
A: What are you doing Rebecca?
R: I’m going to make some ice cream you know how to make ice cream?
A: Yes of course
R: Really?
A: I’m absolutely sure.
R: Will you show me how?
A: Of course, I’ll show right now.
R: Great
A: First, you need to prepare the ingredients, you will need a cup of milk
1/2 cup of sugar a cup of whipped cream1/2 teaspoon of salt than you
need some equipment they are small and a bit can a half to 1 cup of
rock salt three to four cup of ice cube cloth or towel and some tape.
R: Okay, then what do we have to do?

3
A: First, we have to mix all of the ingredients, then pour the ingredients
mixture into the small can after that close the lid and seal it with the
tape, then put the small can into the large can, next put the ice into the
large can around the small can after that add the rock salt into the ice
and close and seal the large can then wrap the large can with a cloth or a
towel and shake and roll the can for 15 minutes, That’s it

Listening for Numbers

Numbers
One detail we often need to listen for numbers. There are two types of
numbers:
Cardinal numbers (one, two, three…..)are used for quantities, time, sizes, and
prices.

For examples:
1. I’m a size nine
2. It costs twenty dollars
3. This bag is ten dollars
5
4. My family has three cars.
5. In Cambodia, there are twenty-five provinces.
6. It’s eight o’clock in the morning.
7. It’s ten after two in the afternoon.
Ordinals numbers (first, second, third …..) are used for dates and the order of
things in a series or sequence.

For example:
1. Today is January sixteenth.
2. Our class is on the third floor.
3. It’s the first day of the month.
4. We leave on the twentieth.
5. Our friends are waiting on the second floor.
6. I use my second phone just for call only.
7. I will go to my hometown on February the fifteenth.

Listening for similarities

listening for similarities

Listening is very important to do on a daily basis. The biggest similarity
between and hearing is that both word use your ears. Hearing is also a part
of your 5 senses, which most of us were born with the ability to do listening
is having an understanding of what someone said to you.

Example:
➢ Comparing listening and hearing: the similarities between
listening and hearing.
While hearing can be related to listening that doesn't mean that
someone is actually listening to what you are saying. There are many ways
to compare listening and hearing, some ideas include, your brain having
the ability to process information,
6
Understanding words, and being able to learn. Listening is having an
understanding of what someone said to you. You should also be able to
repeat what was said to you to you to clarify understanding. Hearing is
being able to perceive sound, which is the moment that the pressure
Waves hit our ear drums; whereas listening is interpreting the meaning of
the words. Just because you hear music, playing does not mean you know
what the song is saying. When people listen, they comprehend what is
being said. Hearing someone means sound hits their ear drum then travel
to the brain, but when the sound hits the brain, the brain is receiving the
words and turn the words into sentences.

Speaking Skill

Asking follow up Questions

Follow up Questions
A follow-up question is a question you ask to get more information. It helps
move a conversation forward, and it allows you to talk about a topic in
more detail.
We can ask yes/no or wh- question. Study these examples.
➢ I live with my family.

Is your family small? (yes/ no)

➢ My brother is in university.

➢ What is he like? (wh- Question)

Making acceptance and declining
invitations
Acceptance and Declining invitation
Acceptance invitation: is the action of agreeing with a request and
approving of it.
Declining invitations: is the action of refuse politely to a request.
We can accept or decline an invitation. But when we decline; we usually
give a reason. Study these examples

Sour. That sounds great.
2. Would you like to go out for a coffee?
Yes. Let's go.

Declining
1. Can you come to my brother wedding tomorrow?
I am sorry, but I can’t. I have to work tomorrow.
2. Let's meet at 12 o’clock.

Sorry, I can't. I'm busy at that time.

Making offer and request

Making offer
making offer : is an action of saying that you are willing to do something for
somebody or give something to somebody.
we can use can I .../ shall I... /would you like (to)... to make offers. For
examples:
➢ Can I help you?
➢ Shall I help you with that?

8
➢ Shall I call you on your mobile?
➢ Would you like another drink?

Making request
Making request : is an action of asking for something formally and politely.
we can use could you... and would you... as polite ways of telling or asking
someone to do something. For examples :
