Science Quarter 3-Module 2 DNA: Name

The document discusses DNA and its structure and function. It defines DNA as deoxyribonucleic acid and describes its double helix shape. The document also explains that DNA is made up of nucleotides containing phosphate, deoxyribose and one of four bases (A, T, G, C), which bond together in base pairs (A-T, G-C). The combination of bases determines physical traits. The document further discusses DNA replication and how RNA carries messages to ribosomes for protein synthesis.

SCIENCE
Quarter 3- Module 2
DNA

Name:
Lesson

1 DNA

Overview

The body’s coordination and communication functions are regulated by two important systems. These
are the nervous system and the endocrine system. These system produce messenger, which may be chemical
or electrical in nature, that carry messages and instructions to the cells.
Learning objectives
After going through this module, I can:
1. differentiate transcription and translation.
Activating Prior Knowledge

Task 1: Essay
Direction: Analyze the situation given. Choose and explain the best answer. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
Rubrics: 10 pts – If the answer was explained very well and showed correct usage of grammar.
5 pts – If the answer was explained well but some error in grammar.
0 pt – If the answer was not correct and not related to the question

1. Explain the importance of DNA.

Lesson

DNA

"The Blueprint of Life"

DNA stands for...

 Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid

DNA FACTS
Established by James Watson and Francis Crick

Shape of a double helix

o What is a nucleotide?

Has three parts:

1. PHOSPHATE
2. DEOXYRIBOSE (sugar)
3. BASE  (A,T,G,C

Base-Pair Rule

Adenine <==> Thymine

Guanine <==> Cytosine

The sides of the DNA ladder are phosphate & sugar held together by  hydrogen
bonds

Task 2. Find My Pair.

Using the base pair rule write the correct pair of every code of DNA. Write your answer on a separate sheet of
paper.

BASE PAIR STRUCTURE

How the Code Works?

 The combination of A,T,G,C determines what traits you might have, for ex.
C A T C A T   =  purple hair
T A C T A C  =  yellow hair

Task 3. Lets Review!

Answer the question below of What You Know About DNA. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1.  DNA stands for:   De _____ ribo ______  acid

2.  What is the shape of DNA? _______________
3.  Who established the structure of DNA?  ____________
4.  Adenine always pairs with _______________
5.  The sides of the DNA ladder are deoxyribose and _____
6.  Guanine always pairs with _____________
7.  What is the complimentary sequence:   A A T  G  C A
8.  The two sides of DNA are held together by _______ bonds.
9.  DNA is composed of repeating subunits called ______________________
10.  What are the 4 bases that make up the rungs of the DNA ladder?______________

DNA REPLICATION

the process by which DNA makes a copy of itself (cell division)

SEMI-CONSERVATIVE - half of the old strand is saved

RNA - the
messenger

*single strand
*ribose sugar
*contains no
thymine, uracil
instead
*can leave the
nucleus
*follows base pair rule

DNA:   A  T  A   G  C
G
RNA:   U A U C G
C
RNA carries the "message" to the ribosomes, where proteins are made
Assessment

Assessment 1. Discuss!

1. On a 1 whole sheet of paper discuss comprehensively the process of protein synthesis(written work)
Rubrics: 50 pts – If the answer was explained very well and showed correct usage of grammar.
30 pts – If the answer was explained well but some error in grammar.
10 pt – If the answer was not correct and not related to the question
