Lesson
Place Value and the Value of a Digit
2 of a Given Decimal Number
Overview
This module will help the learners understand and apply the ideas gained in the place value and the value
itself of a digit in a decimal number. The lessons acquired in this particular topic will help the learner identify the
importance of the place value where the digit in a decimal number is found along with the other digits and its
value according to its place or location in a given decimal number.

Learning Objectives
After going through this module, I can:
1. identify the place value of a given decimal number.

Activating Prior Knowledge

Direction: Write the place value and value of the underlined digit. An example is done for you. Write
your answers on your activity notebook.

Decimal Number Place Value Value

Ex. 3.74 hundredths 0.04
1 0.15
2 0.86
3 0.39

PLACE VALUE CHART

Whole Number Decimal Number

Tens Ones Decimal Point Tenths Hundredths
(10) (1)
and 1 1
= 0.1 =0.01
10 100
1 2 • 7 5
The tens and ones columns before the decimal point are whole numbers. The tenths and hundredths
columns after the decimal point are decimal numbers. These numbers are less than 1. The decimal point
separates the whole numbers from the decimal numbers.

A. Look and study the place value chart on how to find the place value of 7 and 5.

a. 7 is the first number after the decimal point,

so, its place value is tenths.

b. 5 is the second number after the decimal point,

so, its place value is hundredths.

B. Look and study the place value chart on how to find the value of 7 and 5.

a. 7 is in the tenths (0.1) place, multiply 7 by 0.1 to get the value of 7.

0.1
x7
0.7, therefore the value of 7 is 0.7

b. 5 is in the hundredths (0.01) place, multiply 5 by 0.01 to get the

value of 5.
0.01
x 5
0.05, therefore the value of 5 is 0.05
Assessment
Direction: Complete the chart. An example is done for you. Write your answers on your Mathematics activity
notebook.

Decimals Tens Ones Tenths Hundredths

Ex. 5.05 5 . 0 5
1.0.65 .
2.0.38 .
