Cyclone Nivar

Where was it formed?


On November 22, an area of low pressure was formed in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of
Tamil Nadu. It intensified into a depression on the early hours of November 23. In the early
hours of November 24, it intensified into a cyclonic storm and it was named Nivar.
Where did it first hit land?
Cyclone Nivar made a landfall in Puducherry and weakened after crossing the coast in the
Union Territory and Tamil Nadu. But before that Nivar very rapidly transformed into a very
severe storm from a severe category cyclone.

Dissipated: November 27, 2020

How did it form?

The eighth depression and fourth named storm of the 2020 North Indian
Ocean cyclone season, Nivar originated from a disturbance in the Intertropical Convergence
Zone.
How much impact did it cause?
Puducherry. Trees were uprooted, electric poles were damaged and several areas were flooded
as of November 26. The Chief Minister of Puducherry V. Narayanasamy reported that the initial
loss in agriculture and other sectors was estimated at ₹4 billion (US$54.2 million).
What intensity did it have?
Very severe cyclonic storm (IMD scale)

Safety measures taken by the government for the cyclone?


As precautionary measures in Tamil Nadu, a two-day red alert has been issued for the delta
districts (where heavy rainfall of over 20 cm is expected) for November 24 and 25. Preparations
have also been made at Ariyalur, Mayiladuturai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, all of
which had incurred heavy losses during Cyclone Gaja in 2018. Similarly, an orange alert has
been sounded in areas where rainfall is projected to range from 11 cm to 20 cm. These places
include Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Cuddalore
and the Villupuram districts.
