Lab#9: Data Link Layer Traffic Simulation using CISCO

Packet Tracer

Introduction
Packet Tracer is a proprietary tool of Cisco. It is used to create and simulate network virtually. It
gives same environment virtually as it exists physically. You can work on all devices virtually as
you would work on them physically. This tool provides all types of network devices to create
real time working network and also provides same interface as if you are working on real device.

Objectives
 Cable a network according to the given topology diagram.
 Assign IP addresses.
 Explore differences between hubs and switches on how they deal with packet.
 Explore how broadcast mechanism is done in a network.
 Test and verify configurations.
 Reflect upon and document the network implementation
Experiment Procedure
1. Run Packet tracer program on your computer.
2. From End Device click on PC and add PC0, PC1, PC3 and PC4.
3. Now go to network devices then to hub and select PT-Hub.
4. Place PT-Hub under PC0 and PC1 and use auto connect or copper straight-through
cable to connect PC and hub.
5. Again, go to network devices and select Switch 2950-24.
6. Place it under PC2 and PC3 and use auto connect or copper straight-through cable to
connect PC and switch.

8. Once connects are made, we can now configure IP addresses and subnet masks on hosts.
9. Click on PC0. Choose config tab and click on settings.
10. Click on FastEthernet and give IP address 172.16.1.10 click on subnet mask and write
255.255.0.0 (if it does not appear automatically).
11.

12. Click on PC1. Choose config tab and click on settings.

13. Click on FastEthernet and give IP address 172.16.1.11 click on subnet mask and write
255.255.0.0 (if it does not appear automatically).

15. Click on PC2. Choose config tab and click on settings.

16. Click on FastEthernet and give IP address 172.16.1.12 click on subnet mask and write
255.255.0.0 (if it does not appear automatically).
17.

18. Click on PC3. Choose config tab and click on settings.

19. Click on FastEthernet and give IP address 172.16.1.13 click on subnet mask and write
255.255.0.0 (if it does not appear automatically).

21. Now we will connect the hub to switch.

22. Click on auto connect and click on hub then click on switch and make the connection.
You can also connect manually using FastEthernet connection.
23.

24. Given below is the complete network topology. Successful connection is indicated by green
arrows.

25. Now click on simple PDU and click on PC0 and PC3.
26.

27. Run the simulation and observe the resulting outcome.

How is a hub different in operation from a switch?

Can a switch perform broadcast? Give reasons for your answer.
How many ports does a hub have?
How many ports does a switch have?
