WORDS OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

In the name of God the Almighty, the Merciful.

For many years, I went through several bookstores in search of good reference books for SPM
writing but I could not find any that I was satisfied with, so I began to develop my own materials to
teach my students how to write compositions. However, my materials were not organised so I finally
decided to compile everything into one place – this module.

This module contains notes and questions which I have either developed or gathered, edited
and adapted, from various sources.

A special thank you I dedicate to these wonderful persons without whom, this module would
never come into existence:

- Ms Nurfarah Zawani binti Mohd Zamil (SMKDSA Head of Panel), for giving her full support
and aides for this project, as well as for providing invaluable sample essays.
- Ms Wan Hasniza binti Othman (SMK Kelibang), for inspiring me with her REXAMPFIT
THREADVICE tool which I used in this module.

Hafizuddin bin Yahaya,

SMK Dato’ Syed Ahmad,

06300 Kuala Nerang,

Kedah.

Disclaimer:

I do not own any of the questions used in this module. Some questions are used in their
original forms, while some other questions have been modified by the author due to a number of
reasons, e.g. incorrect format, to improve contents, or to adjust the level of difficulty.

This module is developed for the use of SMK Dato’ Syed Ahmad students.

FAQ HOW DO YOU USE THIS MODULE?

(if you think you know how to use this module, please skip this page)

1. Always read the FAQ pages.

The fact that you are reading this shows that you are on the right track. Keep on
reading!

Note: FAQ stands for “Frequently Asked Questions.” It explains to you the important
things you need to know about each format of DW composition.

2. Analyse the format template

There are five (5) formats for DW writing. For each format, one comprehensive
template is provided. The template will highlight important components of each
composition’s format. You will also find useful phrases suitable for each template –
make full use of them!

3. Benefit the useful connectors

This module also provides a handful of useful connectors which you can use in your
writing. Analyse the samples and practise how to use them!

4. Track your vocabulary learning

At the back of this module, you will find a few blank pages for vocabulary. How do you
use it? When you go through the questions in this module and you found words you
do not understand, jot them down in the Vocabulary Tracker. On your free time, look
up the meaning of these words in this

5. Keep your ideas organised!

For each question, there is a page where you can brainstorm/map your ideas.
Following the suggestions on that page, you will learn how to expand and organise
your ideas through brainstorming and mind-mapping.

6. Finally, write your essay…

Yes, now that you already have your ideas expanded and organised, it is time to turn
them into a piece of writing. Be confident. You can do it!

7. Your teacher is your best guide!

If you are ever in doubt, refer to your teacher because he or she always knows what
and how to do things (even when he or she does not follow the instructions in this
module. They may have their own approach, you know).

SAMPLE ESSAY
No 120, Taman Jati,
06300 Kuala Nerang,
Kedah.

Dear Melissa,

How are you? I hope you are in the best of health. I am alive and kicking here. How
was your study? I heard you are confused whether to stay at the hostel or at home in order
to study better. I write this letter to share my opinion with you. I hope it would help you to
study better for the upcoming SPM examination.

First, it is about study hours. If you stay at home, you will have longer and flexible
study hours. You can study whenever you want. You do not have to rush because there is no
particular rule forbidding you from staying up late. If you stay at the hostel, you must follow
strict hostel rules. For example, hostelites must study from 8 until 10pm every night during
prep session. You also need to think about how you do your homework. If you stay at home,
you have to do your homework on your own even though you can still search information on
the Internet. If you stay at the hostel, you can discuss in groups. For instance, you can ask
your friends about your homework and exchange information.

Next, you need to consider about Internet access. If you stay at home, you can have
unlimited access to the Internet. You can search information from various websites or connect
to friends on social media to exchange information. However, if you stay at the hostel, you
may have limited access to the Internet. It will be hard for you to search for information and
you will get bored without entertainment. Another factor you need to look at is social
interaction. If you stay at home, you can share your problems with your parents or siblings.
For example, you can tell them if you have problem at school and they will listen to you. If
you stay at the hostel, you have many friends to talk to when you are bored. You can also
share gossips about your crush with them.

11
SMKDSA English Language Panel

Finally, it is about outing. If you stay at home, you can go wherever and whenever you
want. For example, you can go out to watch movie at cinema with your friends or family
members. You can relieve your stress by spending time with your loved ones. However, if you
stay at the hostel, you can only go out only once every fortnight. In fact, you are only allowed
to go out to places near the school. It would be no fun!

In my opinion, I would suggest that you stay at home. This is because you can have
longer study hours. You can also do your homework on your own while listening to music.
Other than that, your access to the internet is also unlimited. You also have your parents and
siblings who can listen to you when you have problems.

That is all for now. I hope you can study better. Good luck for your SPM examination!

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Fathihah

FAQ FORMAL LETTER

Q: What is a formal letter?
A: A formal letter is a letter, written in formal language using a certain format for official
(e.g. business and professional) purposes.

Q: When do you write a formal letter?

A: Formal letters are written for several purposes:

1. To complain (about an issue, service, etc.)

2. To inquire information (on a particular issue or details)
3. To request (permission, sponsorship, etc.)
4. To explain or give opinion (about a particular issue or details)

Q: Who is the audience?

A: Since formal letters are written for official purposes, the audience is usually the head
of organisations which must always be addressed with “Sir/Madam.” However, since
the audience is not somebody you are familiar with, it is always safe to use “Sir” for
salutation (i.e. Dear Sir).

Q: Are there any important tips to remember?

A: When writing formal letters, remember to
1. Use the appropriate format (refer the notes on DW Template page).
2. Keep your language formal, simple and straightforward.
3. Passive voices are used more often.
4. Avoid using informal language such as idioms and proverbs.
5. Avoid using contractions (e.g. I’m, you’re, it’s).
6. Make sure the ideas are well-planned and well-organised.

SAMPLE ESSAY
No.8055, Taman Ali,
06300 Kuala Nerang,
Kedah Darul Aman.

Manager,
Najibah Restaurant,
Lot 46, Kompleks Kasturi,
06300 Kuala Nerang,
Kedah Darul Aman. 31 March 2019.

Dear Sir,

Complaint about the Service of Najibah Restaurant

I am writing this letter to complain about the service and conduct of the restaurant workers
as well as about the condition of your restaurant.

2. First, I am bothered about your workers’ attitude. Not only were they slow in serving the
customers, they also made the customers felt angry with their lack of manners. I had to call
out for the waiters a few times before a waiter came to take my order. Besides, they were
also rude when serving the food. The workers were also noisy and unprofessional. One of
them was smoking while serving the food to the customers. They laughed so loud and talked
to each other that made the customers felt uncomfortable.

3. I am also concerned about your cashier. The cashier was incompetent. She made mistakes
when returning balance to the customers. The balance she gave was often incorrect. The
cashier also forgot the price of some of the food and beverages in the menu. As a result, there
was a long queue at the counter. Lastly, I felt uneasy with the workers’ unsuitable attire. The
cook did not wear apron and she did not tie her long hair.

4. Not only were the workers’ service disappointing, the restaurant was also in bad condition.
The greasy cutlery made me regret going to the restaurant. The table was also not properly
cleaned. The cover cloth was dirty and the table top felt sticky. It made me lose my appetite.
Even worse, the surrounding was so unhygienic with spider webs on the ceiling and
cockroaches crawling around on the floor.

5. I believe your restaurant is in dire need of improvements so I am going to lay down some
suggestions so as to improve the services of the restaurant. My first suggestion is that you
should employ more workers. It is because the more workers you have means your customers
will be served more promptly. Furthermore, you should only select disciplined and skilled
workers. It will help the restaurant become more efficient as well as raise your restaurant’s

38

image. In order to improve overall performance of your workers in the long run, you should
send them for training.

6. As for the restaurant, you need to make sure it is thoroughly cleaned at least twice a week.
The workers have to clean the restaurant by mopping and scrubbing the floor before closing
the restaurant. By cleaning, the restaurant every week, you can maintain a standard
cleanliness of the restaurant. Moreover, I think it would be a great idea to renovate the
restaurant in order to accommodate more customers. With new and refreshing look, it can
attract more customers to come to your restaurant. As you might already know, the condition
of a restaurant is another vital factor to attract customers other than the excellent services.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you can take immediate action to
improve the service and conducts of the workers as well as the condition of the restaurant.

Yours faithfully,

Haiqal Kamarudin

SAMPLE ESSAY
To : Principal of SMK Tunku Nerang
From : Nuqman Mursyid B. Ramli
Title : Indiscipline among Students

Indiscipline has been considered a banality among students in this school. Indiscipline
grows worse when police force is involved to solve crime-characterized cases happening
around this school. Truancy, vandalism, and even gangsterism, are among the examples of
true, serious matter of indiscipline. This report aims to address different types of indiscipline
cases, the causes as well as the measures that can be taken to curb the problem.
The worst indiscipline case in our school is vandalism. In almost every class, traces of
scribbles can be found on the walls and desks. It is very disappointing that school properties
such as chairs, desks and flower pots are found broken on daily basis. The culprits are usually
the upper form students. Another rampant case of indiscipline is fighting among the students.
The boys often get into fist fights over the smallest disputes between them, whereby the girls
often resort to verbal abuse using obscene language whenever they quarrel.
Another serious case of indiscipline ruining our school’s image is truancy. Some
students skipped school altogether while some others would pretend coming to school but
never turn up in class. They often bring along spare outfits which they changed into before
going to other places such as malls and cyber cafes. Stealing is also another serious indiscipline
behaviour we need to address. Many cases of stolen pocket money and personal belongings
such as school bags and stationeries have been reported from day to day. Due to lack of
actions being taken on the perpetrators, even more serious theft cases have been reported.
Our school laboratories and school canteen have also fallen victim to theft.

In order to understand the causes of indiscipline cases at our school, I have

interviewed a number of our students in order to get their feedbacks. From the interview, I
found out that most of the students involved in disruptive behaviours inside and outside class
are mostly having family problems. They either come from a broken family with divorced
parents or from a big family where their parents are too busy with work. When these students
lack love and attention at home, they often seek it from somewhere else. The easiest
replacement for their parents would be their friends. More often than not, these students
would choose a wrong crowd to hang out with. These negative peers would usually influence
them to try smoking and other crimes such as truancy, stealing and vandalism.

Surprisingly, school environment has also contributed to these heinous crimes.

According to a few respondents, the discipline at our school is pretty loose due to
irresponsible prefects who either do not report misconducts they encounter or simply let the
perpetrators get away. This is a serious matter we need to immediately address. The last

66
SMKDSA English Language Panel

cause of indiscipline reported from the interview is due to students’ lack of interest in studies.
When these students are not interested in studies, they often find other ways to occupy their
time by committing misbehaviours.

In order to curb the indiscipline problems I have mentioned earlier, I will list down a
number of suggestions. For first offence, we should send the students to see counsellors for
counselling sessions. We could also organise a talk on discipline with cooperation and help
from our local police. If any student repeats their offences more than three times, it is only
fair to give them heavier punishments as a lesson. Regarding the lack of cooperation from our
school prefects, close monitoring by discipline teachers is needed. In fact, it would be a great
idea if we could involve parents too since one of the factors, as mentioned earlier, is lack of
love and attention at home. Perhaps if we involve the parents to help monitor their children,
we could see a decline in indiscipline cases.
As a conclusion, indiscipline can be thwarted if we take proper and immediate actions.
It is my hope that the school administrators would look into the matters so as to ensure a
better environment for our school’s future.

SAMPLE ESSAY
Good morning to the Principal, teachers and my dear students. Recently, we have
been hearing many cases of accident happening in school, at home and even on the road. Out
of concern for everyone’s safety, our beloved principal asked me to deliver a speech today
entitled “Safety Measures for You and Me.” I promise I won’t take too much of your time, so
please lend me your attentive ears and your undivided attention.
Boys and girls,

First, let me share with you some tips on how to keep our school safe. Unwanted
incidents often happen in school when we let uninvited individuals into our school ground.
Hence, to keep our school safe from unwanted danger, we can have a visitor sign-in by the
guard post. Every visitor needs to leave their information or their identification card before
getting a visitor’s pass. If we have visitor sign-in, we can easily keep track who comes into the
school compound in case any unsolicited mishaps such as theft or sabotage were to occur.
Next, our school should also plan occasionally execute fire drills. This is because fire can break
out at any time when we least expect it. We can also invite local fire department officers to
give a talk or demonstrate the safety measures should be taken during fire.
As for us students, the best way to avoid any unwanted incidents is by following our
school’s rules especially when we are in certain places such as the library or laboratories. The
rules are there to keep us safe. For example, we are not allowed to run in laboratories and
workshops because we might fall or bump into dangerous objects or tools such as nails or test
tubes and flasks. We should not handle any chemical substances or heavy tools without
teacher’s supervision. Teacher’s supervision is also important during outdoor activities. By
following teacher’s instructions, we can keep ourselves out of harm’s way. In the case that
any accidents were to occur, our teacher could take swift and immediate actions to prevent
worse case scenarios.
Members of the floor,

Remember, accidents may occur at anytime, anywhere – even in the comfort of our
homes. In order to prevent such accidents, it is best to keep harmful items and products away
from children’s reach. Keep dangerous tools such scissors and knife is safe and locked places
such as drawers. Keep medicines and pesticides on high shelves where children cannot reach.
We all know that children are not only curious, but they can also be hyperactive. They love to
run around the house, neglecting their own safety. In order to prevent any unwanted
accident, we need to make sure floors in our house – especially bathroom floors, are always
dry and clean. Slippery floors and hyperactive children are the perfect combination for
physical mishaps.
Another preventive measure I would like to recommend is to place a fire extinguisher
in the kitchen. It is best if the device is portable and not too heavy for teenagers like us to
handle. Who knows if an accident occurs when you are cooking your favourite dish? After all,

94
SMKDSA English Language Panel

fire is good servant but a bad master! Keeping first aid kits at home is also a good idea. In fact,
every home should keep one. You never know when you would need an ointment for your
stomach-ache or bandages to stop your bleeding before you can finally see a doctor for
proper treatments.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Are you still with me? I hope you still are because I’m going to share some tips you can
do to ensure your safety while you are on the road. I’m sure many of the students here come
to school by motorcycle. If you are, make sure you use helmet at all times even when you are
riding your bike around your neighbourhood. I know it sounds lame but you would be grateful
to be wearing a helmet if an accident were to occur. For those who drive cars, make sure to
put on your safety belt even though you are only the passenger. Did you know that passengers
have higher risk of death if they don’t put on their safety belt? It is because the front seaters
normally has airbags to cushion the impact but there is none for other passengers.

One of the main causes of road accident is speeding. I understand that sometimes we
are running late for school or to work but it does not mean that we can disregard our own
safety. Please avoid speeding as best as you can because speeding kills. Last but not least,
please make sure to follow traffic rules. Rules are there for a reason, and that is to keep things
in order. Remember, safety always starts with you.

It seems that we are running out of time, so I will stop here. I really hope the safety
measures I have shared today are beneficial to everyone. Thank you for lending me your
ears, and keep safe!
Thank you.

SAMPLE ESSAY
How Technology Affects Our Lives
By: Bee Jian Sien

Since time immemorial, humans have been evolving and beginning to create new
things. Since then, the evolution of technology – from the use of fire and simple tools to
machines and computers – has not yet stopped. Humans are getting more creative and
innovative by the day. Some of them would rather sacrifice their time and money in the hope
to improvise the current existing technology. Do you ever wonder how technology affects our
daily lives? What if technology never existed, or simply stagnates in its early days’ forms? If
you are interested to find out the answers, keep reading because in this article, I will share
with you how technology could possible affect your life.

Technology affects our lives in many ways. The most common changes in our lives
since the arrival of technology is the way we communicate with one another. Today, we can
save our time by sending chats and text messages to our friends instead of sending physical
letters. Before the invention of smartphones and computers, people had to wait more than a
week only to receive letters from their local friends. Can you imagine how much longer would
it take for letters from abroad to reach you? You see, not only technology saves our time, it
also keeps us connected and updated. People nowadays can see each other even though they
are miles apart by using video call or video conference. Applications such Facebook and
Instagram also allows us to broadcast our activities live. As such, people can stay updated
about each other’s wellbeing as well as on the latest news worldwide. Technology also allows
us to communicate at a much cheaper price. With basic internet package which we can
subscribe for as low as RM5 or RM10, we can send countless text messages and make long-
hour calls with people from across the globe.
Technology also affects transportation. In its early days, vehicles did not have air
conditioner or comfortable cushions like we have today. With technology humans have
developed over time, they were somehow able to fit not only air conditioning system and soft
cushions, but also safety mechanisms such as airbags and GPS systems into today’s vehicles.
We can only imagine what other things technology would make it possible in order to make
our lives more comfortable. If you use public transportations a lot, you must have experienced
waiting for more than an hour for your bus to arrive. To combat such frustration, applications
such as GrabCar and Uber were created for our convenience. We no longer need to wait long
hours to get a lift because everything now is at the tip of our fingertips. In fact, technology
has also helped to make travelling long distances easier. With the invention of aeroplanes and
high-speed trains, we no longer need to get trapped in traffic congestions during our long
ride.

124
SMKDSA English Language Panel

With the invention of technology, people now have a huge library in their palm. With
access to the Internet, they have unlimited source of information and it becomes more
convenient to search for anything on search engines such Google and Yahoo. With online
news portals and reading applications such as Wattpad and Kindle, we do not even need to
buy physical books or newspapers anymore. Moreover, technology also improves the way we
study or do revisions. We can use multiple applications that can help us keep track of our
revision or schedule our daily activities. By using these tools, we can lead a more active
lifestyle while at the same time keeping track of our learning. In fact, with a lot of clip videos
and poscasts on YouTube and other websites, we can learn new things while on the go.
Do you ever feel tired or too lazy to go to a shopping mall just to buy something you
do not urgently need? With online shopping sites such as Lazada, Shopee and 11Street, you
can shop online in the comfort of your home. Besides, you have the source of limitless
entertainment in your pocket. You can listen to music, watch a movie or play games at home
as a way of relieving stress after a long day at work or school. Furthermore, technology also
make your life easier. For example, you can book tickets for movies or public transportation
from your home or workplace without the need to stand in a long queue. Realise it not, your
life is getting easier each day.

Technology may have brought a lot of boons in our lives but we must remember this:
Everything in this world that has benefits must have its disadvantages. The biggest downside
of technology is it makes people lazy as everything can be done in a just a few clicks or taps.
This will lead to an unhealthy sedentary lifestyle. As a result, we can observe more people are
facing serious obesity problems. Ultimately, technology is just a tool and it all depends on
how we utilise it. Just like fire, technology is also a good servant but a bad master.
