Directions: Give your analysis and reflection on the given questions. Write your answer on the space
provided below.

1. In three words, describe St. John Baptist de La Salle as a friend to Nicholas Roland and how
would you apply these qualities to promote camaraderie within the Lasallian community.

ANSWER:
Loving, caring and understanding. La Salle displayed these characteristics as he accepted
Nicholas Roland with open arms. He did not discriminate his story, he cared for his purpose, and
he understood his reasons and current situation. I can apply these qualities by certain scenarios.
For example, if one Lasallian is having mental or emotional struggles, I will love, care, and
understand him. I will welcome and support him with open arms. I will accept and love everyone
in the community. I will care for their needs and understand their present situation. I will not
promote backstabbing which is based on a one-sided story, rather promote a personal
confrontation with the parties involved. In promoting camaraderie within the community, these
qualities are important to be applied since these are the basics of having a free-flowing,
successful, and united goal. It all starts by accepting everyone in the community upon which the
qualities of loving, caring, and understanding can greatly be applied.

2. Explain the significance and purpose of Nyel in coming to France.

ANSWER:
Nyel aimed to have a school for boys also. He saw that La Salle was doing great in his sister
schools and he was also promised by Madame de Maillefer to be furnished with financial
support. He wants to be the principal and first class teacher. He wanted to seek for an advice
and assistance from La Salle before starting his own educational work. In my opinion, what Nyel
had done in coming to France is an example of overcoming to what has been a recent issue of
gender equality. He wanted to also have the other gender or sex to be equal with the other,
inclined to what Madame de Maillefer has ordered. This step should be an inspiration for the
ongoing issue of gender discrimination and equality. It should start from both of the man and
women. Men should support these changes and should lower their pride. Women should also
know their true place and get it while not stepping on the rights of men. It should be an equal,
give and take process. This purpose of Nyel’s coming to France may be as simple as building a
school for boys so that he will be supported financially by Maillefer, or can also be extended to
as a fundamental step and inspiration to solve gender issues in the past, present and in the
future.

REFLECTION

Directions: What important lessons have you learned from the story of Madame Malefier and how
would you apply these lessons in your lives as a Lasallian today.

ANSWER:
This story of Madame de Maillefer has the potential to touch many of the spiritual hearts of people. It
was even able to teach me very common yet deep lessons about life and living in accordance to our
spiritual life. First, it taught me to be humble as we don’t know what tomorrow will bring forth. It is a
typical yet very important lesson as this is tend to be astounded by our achievements in life. By my case,
sometimes, I forget to be humble. I can apply this by always being thankful and grateful of what I have
to God. I will always remember that no matter how high I am in rankings, we are still the same people,
living in the same image of God, therefore reminding me to stay humble. Second, it also taught and
reminded me of the famous quote of don’t do to others what you don’t want the others to do to you.
This is a simple message about the give and takes in life. It reminded me that for everything to go in your
way, you would have to think of the others sake first. It prompted me to love my neighbors and care for
them not just for the sake of them not hating on me, but as to the fact that it is an important virtue
being taught to us by our Church and an order of God. Third, it imparted me the thought of doing my
best, and God will do the rest. We can apply this lesson in life such as if we are in a competition. We
would need to do our best by reviewing and preparing for the competition, and God will do the rest by
guiding us with the proper knowledge and skills to perform well. No matter the result, we also have to
remember to be grateful to God as what he has done to us has a special purpose. Other lessons that I
learned in the story was of the fact that people can still change for the better in life and the lesson of
respecting everyone regardless their socio-economic status. We can apply these lessons by not
discriminating rather love, care and understand everyone in the society. Every story we read, see, and
witness can give us many valuable lessons in different aspects of life. What we need to do is to
understand, comprehend, and apply these lessons. It’s nonsense if you just know and comprehend the
lesson. Do and apply it in your life! Stories are there to inspire us to be better in life. It is there to give us
fun, a time-killer, and to give us life-changing teachings. Praise the lessons, don’t bash the author.
