Answer the following questions.

Question No. 1: (4 Marks)

Based on the low representation of women in upper management, to what extent do you
think that organizations should actively promote women into the senior ranks of
management? Think of a group or team to which you currently belong or of which you
have been a part. What type of leadership style did the leader of this group appear to
exhibit? Give some specific examples of the types of leadership behaviors he or she used.
Evaluate the leadership style. Was it appropriate for the group? Why or why not? What
would you have done differently? Why?

I think promoting women in a senior rank wouldn't be anything less than promoting a man.
Nowadays, organizations start promoting women in various areas. They start looking at a
woman equal to man. Women can mostly do anything that a men can do and in our society
today, we acknowledge the capability of women in our industry.
Question No 2: (4 Marks)
Identify an example of someone you think of as a good leader (currently or in the past).
What traits did he or she have? How did these traits differ from someone you identify
as a bad leader?
Great leaders can come from all walks of life. Most of the leaders overcome the failures and
obstacles they encounter along the way. People desire good leaders due to their ways of
authority, which reflect on what people want, and they do their best to deliver the best to the
people. An example of a good leader was Bill Gates, one of the most admired business
leaders in the United States. After his retirement in 2008 from Microsoft, he nurtured and
encouraged enormous innovations and creativities from the people and recognized various
achievements.
On the other hand, there are those leaders who do not demonstrate the required qualities; are
regarded as bad leaders—an example of a bad leader in Travis Kalnick, who is the founder of
Uber. After the company was developed, it shook up the taxi industry, leading to heavy losses
in various ways, for instance, when an Uber driver killed a pedestrian and expanded to China,
where it incurred heavy losses.

Explanation:
Traits of a good leader
• Shows Integrity and honesty
Being intelligent and having honesty is one of the essential qualities of a good leader. When a
leader practices honesty and integrity, as in the case of Bill Gates, he was able to gain trust
from the employees and the company at large.
• Inspires others
Being one of the company's significant leaders, Bill Gates inspired others through everything
he did. It includes the way he used to make the different decisions that, in return, positively
affected the company, which led to its growth.
• Confident
Confidence is an essential element of good leaders. It is so because confident leaders do have
fear in anything that they do, which in return enables them to promote positivism in the
company, for they are always determined to do their best, as in the case of Bill Gates.
• Passionate and committed
Passion is an essential element for all great leaders. When the leaders are passionate, they
tend to do the best for the company. They can also gain the respect of their subordinates,
which enables them to perform their duties better and reach the company's goals and
objectives.
• Empowers and delegates
It is essential for good leaders to have these qualities, for they get to focus on the crucial
responsibilities while leaving other duties to others. In this case, Bill gates did the company's
essential tasks and left the different functions to the other people who were employed in the
company. Hence, in this case, the delegation of tasks is necessary.
• Innovative and creative
When it comes to innovation and creativity, Bill Gates is an example of a leader who
demonstrates these qualities. He is a very innovative and creative person in everything he did
for the Microsoft Company. His decisions were precise and critically thought, for they led to
the rise of the company.
Traits of a bad leader
• They do not deal with arising conflicts.
As in the case of Travis Kalnick, although his Uber Company brought rose major conflicts,
he ignored them and did not term them as relevant. When leaders dodge these disputes, it
results in accumulated resentments, poor communications, and frustrations.
• Bad leaders power trips instead of others
Bad leaders never consider empowering others as their primary goal. On the other hand, real
leaders make efforts to inspire others, develop their team members, and help them be the best.
• They never see the strengths of their team members.
Bad leaders never take the step of getting to know the strengths of their team members. Good
leaders utilize the tools they have to uncover the true potentials of their members.
• They do not take accountability.
Being a great leader means they accept the various responsibilities they have for the projects
and tasks' overall outcome. In this case, Travis Kalnick should have taken the company's
obligations and focus on making the best out of them.

If you are a leader, how you could use “emotional intelligence” in leadership.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your emotions and it can be
used in leadership to make it more effective and efficient. Its efficiency is being explained
below.

Question No 4: (5 Marks)
Starbucks Starbucks is recognized for treating its employees, also known as partners,
well. The coffee giant offers insurance benefits, stock options and retirement plans. But
back in 1997, Starbucks faced a crisis when tragedy struck and three employees were
killed during a robbery in Washington, D.C. The outstanding leadership of CEO
Howard Schultz was demonstrated when he flew straight to D.C. and spent a week with
the co-workers and families of the three employees. While some leaders might have
stayed as far away as possible from this tragic situation, Shultz’s natural leadership
traits prevailed. With compassion, approachability and a dedication to meeting his
partners’ needs, he did what was right. As a result, the public viewed him and
Starbucks more favorably. Justify the above mentioned case study in terms of article
discussed in the class?
According to Daniel Goleman, leadership in business refers to the a company's management's
capability in setting and achieving challenging goals, where taking fast and decisive action is
needed, outperforming the competition, and inspiring others to perform at the highest level
they can. Leadership also involves relating to the tone of the organization's management and
what kind of culture is built for the employees.

A great leader will rise to the top in troubling times, when difficult decisions are made and
decisive action must be taken. Howard Schultz' leadership style that employee-focused left a
standard for other business organization leaders to follow as they lead their own firms or
enterprises, and Schultz grew a global brand in the process. A good leader does not reach the
height of success without facing their share of minor challenges and major crises. Schultz
was able to develop a culture of employee respect through his transformational leadership
style, leaving behind an example for other business owners.

It takes someone with a clear vision and unstoppable fortitude to lead an organization through
its worst times, whether they involve economic troubles, public relations nightmares or
product failures. An outstanding manager like CEO Schultz can take a potentially disastrous
situation and not only prevent it from becoming worse, but turn it into a positive outcome for
the company.

Compassionate leadership can also describe what Schultz did in the case study as he
demonstrated sympathy with the co-workers and families of the three employees were killed
during a robbery in Washington. A compassionate leader means they are actively listening to
those they lead, arriving at a shared understanding of the challenges they face, empathizing
with and caring for their people, and then taking action to help or support them. This kind of
leader is approachable and is comfortable to talk to, and employees find it easy to access this
leader for any difficulties they face at the workplace.
