About the Project

Digital twin technology in manufacturing is the simulation technology that integrates
multi-disciplinary, multi-physical quantity, multiscale and multi probability by making
full use of the physical model, monitoring update, operation history and other data.
This PhD project will combine molecular dynamics and continuum simulation to
research some cutting-edge technology in micromachining technology.

The aim is to develop a simulation code to describe and control the evolution of
defects such as dislocations and microcracks that will affect the performance of the
manufactured material. The project will involve multiscale simulation that includes
atomistic behaviour in advanced manufacturing. The project will explore the
possibility of incorporating arti cial intelligence into micro-nano machining.

This project is in collaboration with the Institute of Technological Sciences, Wuhan

University, China. You are welcome to join this international collaboration effort as a
PhD student.

Candidates should have (or expect to achieve) the UK honours degree at 2.1 or
above (or equivalent) in Applied Mathematics, Solid / Structural Mechanics,
Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Physics.

The applicant should have strong simulation skill in C++ programming and
knowledge of mechanics of materials, micromachining.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

• Apply for Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering

• State name of the lead supervisor as the Name of Proposed Supervisor
• State ‘Self-funded’ as Intended Source of Funding
• State the exact project title on the application form

When applying please ensure all required documents are attached:

• All degree certi cates and transcripts (Undergraduate AND Postgraduate MSc-
o cially translated into English where necessary)
