Multiplies decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places.
(M5NS-IId-111.2)

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

 multiply decimals up to 2 decimal places by 1 to 2-digit whole numbers;
 multiply decimals with factors up to 2 decimal places; and
• multiply decimals by another decimal.

Lesson 1 Multiplying Decimals by Whole Numbers

What is it
Multiplying a Decimal by Whole Number
 Write the factors vertically and multiply the factors like you are multiplying whole
numbers.
 Then count the number of decimal places of the factors to determine the number of
decimal places in the product.

Find the product of 0.63 and 5.

3 1
0.63 2 decimal places
Factors
x 5 1-digit whole number
Product 3.15 (Count the number of decimal places in both factors to
determine the number of decimal places in the
product.)
Lets take another example : Multiply 0.87 by 12
1

Factors 0.87
x 1 12 Distribute the ones digit to the upper factors.
2 x 7 = 14 bring down 4 regroup/carry 1 to the next place value.
174 2 x 8 = 16 added by 1 (carry) gives us 17.
87 Distribute the tens digit to the upper factors.
Product 1 x 7 = 7 be aligned in the tens place of the partial product
10.44 1 x 8 = 8 be aligned in the hundreds place of the partial product
After distributing all the digits get the sum to get the final product.

The number of decimal places Let’s try another example : 1.25 x 13

in both factors will determine
the number of decimal places in 1 Distribute the ones digit to the upper factors.
the final product. 1.25 3 x 5 = 15 bring down 5, carry 1
3 x 2 = 6+1(carry) = 7 bring down
x 1 13 3 x 1 = 3 bring down 375 partial product
375 Distribute the tens digit to the upper factors.
1 x 5 = 5 bring down aligned to 7
125 1 x 2 = 2 bring down aligned to 3
1 x 1 = 1 bring down to the left of 1
16.25 Get the sum & count the number of decimal places
of the factors will indicate for the final product.
What’s More
Compute for the product.

1. 0.75 x 6 2. 0.35 x 42 3. 0.37 x 22 4. 0.61 x 7

Lesson 2 Multiplying Decimals by Decimals

What is it

Multiplying a Decimal by Decimal

 Write the factors vertically and multiply the factors like you are multiplying whole
numbers.
 Then count the number of decimal places of the factors to determine the number of
decimal places in the product.

Find the product of 2.15 and 0.5.

2
2.15 2 decimal places
x 0.5 1-digit whole number
1.075 (Count the number of decimal places in both factors
to determine the number of decimal places in the
product.)

Lets take another example : Multiply 2.54 by 0.25

1 Distribute the hundredths digit to the upper factors.

2 2
2.54 5 x 4 = 20 bring down 0 regroup/carry 2 to the next place
Factors value.
x 1.25
5 x 5 = 25 added by 2 (carry) becomes 27 bring down 7 and
1270
carry 2.
508 5 x 2 = 10 added by 2 ( carry ) is equal to 12
Product 0.6350 Distribute the tenths digit to the upper factors.
2 x 4 = 8 be aligned in the tens place of the partial product
Since the first factor 2 x 5 = 10 bring down 0 and carry 1
has 2 decimal places 2 x 2 = 4 added by 1 (carry) equals 5
& the second factor After distributing all the digits get the sum to get the
has 2 decimal places final product.
then the product
must have 4 decimal
places.

What’s More
Directions : Find the product.

1. 4.28 x 4 2. 2.13 x 26 3. 8.65 x 13 4. 11.9 x 5

Lesson 3 Multiplying Decimals by Another Decimal Numbers

What is it

Find the product of 2.46 and 1.2.

1

Factors 2.46 Distribute the tenths digit to the first factors.

x 11.2 2 x 6 = 12 bring down 2, carry 1
492 2 x 4 = 8+1(carry) = 9 bring down
246 2 x 2 = 4 bring down 492 as partial product
Product Distribute the ones digit to the first factors
2.952 1 x 6 = 6 bring down
1 x 4 = 4 bring down
1 x 2 = 1 bring down
Get the sum & count the number of decimal places of the factors. It
will determine the number of decimal places of the final product.

Lets take another example : Multiply 3.47 by 0.24

1
1 2
3.47
Factors
x 0.24 Distribute the hundredths digit to the first factors.
1388 4 x 7 = 28 bring down 8, carry 2
694 4 x 4 = 16 + 2 (carry) = 18 bring down 8 and carry 1
Product 0.8328 4 x 3 = 12 + 1 (carry )= 13 with 1388 as partial product
Distribute the tenths digit to the first factors.
2 x 7 = 14 bring down 4 carry 1
2 x 4 = 8 + 1 (carry) = 9 bring it down
2 x 3 = 6 bring it down
Get the sum & count the number of decimal places of the
factors. It will determine the number of decimal places of
the final product.

What’s More
Directions : Get the product.

1. 1.35 x 1.2 2. 8.65 x 1.3 3. 2.08 x 0.24 4. 1.19 x 0.35

Based on the topics discussed for the past two weeks, create a Decimal Poster. The
poster will show your learnings on the different topics about decimals ( Place Value, Value,
Reading, Writing, Rounding, Comparing, Arranging, Adding & Subtracting ) previously
discussed. You may include examples to your poster. This Performance Task is due after a
week. This will be included in your submissions for the next week.

What to use?
½ cartolina ( color of your choice ) alternative materials are the old calendars or cartoons /
cardboards
Crayons / Colored Pens / Water Color / Oil Pastel
Pencil for layout.
Colored papers / construction papers ( optional )

You may use the following as your guide.

1. Divide the half-sized cartolina into 4 compartments/parts. ( Take note : Don’t cut it. )
2. Choose 4 topics on decimals ( previously discussed ) that will be used for your poster.
3. The concept notes in your LAS will guide you on what to put & how to create your
poster. Use your imagination to create a design.
4. Illustrations, drawings, cut-outs may be used to clearly show all your learnings on that
certain topic.
5. Make it colorful using crayons and other coloring materials.
