MAED-Educational Management

“Every great design begins with a better story” ( Lorinda Mamo, designer). When we hear a
story, we all begin to picture the missing detail. We started to visualize some alternatives or changes
that might be a big help to the subject. That is why brainstorming is used by design teams to generate
ideas to solve problems.

Design is a process of envisioning and planning the creation of objects or solutions for
people, physical items or systems to address a need or a problem. In education, curriculum design
refers to the ways in which we position the curriculum components. According to Karen Schweitzer,
curriculum design is a term used to describe the purposeful, deliberate, and systematic organization of
curriculum (instructional blocks) within a class or course. In other words, it is a way for teachers
to plan instruction. When teachers design curriculum, they identify what will be done, who will do it,
and what schedule to follow. Teachers design each curriculum with a specific educational purpose in
mind. The ultimate goal is to improve student learning, but there are other reasons to employ
curriculum design as well. For example, designing a curriculum for middle school students with both
elementary and high school curricula in mind helps to make sure that learning goals are aligned and
complement each other from one stage to the next. If a middle school curriculum is designed without
taking prior knowledge from elementary school or future learning in high school into account it can
create real problems for the students.

Designing a curriculum is like making a lesson plan for our learners. We think deeply and
organize lessons and activities that we want our students to learn. We create a list of learning goals,
know our time constraints, plan the instructional methods and establish evaluation. We gather
information through brainstorming to our colleagues and listen, monitor and evaluate our learner’s
response. We also consider the things happening in the society. It is a very big factor that can give
changes to the present situation and school activities that we are giving to our learners. As teachers,
we have to be open for changes that may occur and always be ready for altenatives in times of need.
We have to be flexible to be able to keep up to our fast-changing society. Just like Hillman Curtis
(American New Media Designer) said, “The goal of a designer is to listen, observe, understand,
sympathize, empathize, synthesize, and glean insights that enable him or her to make the invisible
visible”.
