Overview of Hexavalent Chromium Findings SAC DLE

Background LM2500 rear frame (top) and shrouds (bottom right)

• Yellowish powders containing Hexavalent Chromium was
found on as-run LM2500 engine hardware
• Exposure to Chrome VI is associated with increased
health hazard risk and should be avoided
• Similar finding were on reported on GE Power and BH
heavy-duty frame gas turbines
• GE Aviation has reported findings on flight engines
• Refer to GE Service Letter SL25000-IND-19-005
Investigative Status
• GE completed investigations indicating that Cr(VI)
compounds can be formed during engine operation when
calcium containing compounds are used
• GE Aviation confirms ‘environmental dust’ can also create
Cr(VI) containing residues on engine parts
• Approved anti-seize compounds for aeroderivative gas
generators & gas turbines do not contain calcium

Overview of Hexavalent Chromium Findings SAC DLE

Actions and Recommendations

• To avoid the formation of Cr(VI), use approved lubricants and anti-seize compounds as listed in the applicable
sections of the O&M (field manuals) and IRM (shop manuals).
• Follow local HSE and industrial guidelines to evaluate and handle hardware suspected to have Cr(VI) power residues
• Use GE Standard Practice Manual new section published to support handling hardware (SPM 70-00-10 issued
December ’19)
• Follow recommended guidelines in published Service Letter and manual; Adhere to local rules and regulations.
• 2020 Revisions planned for all Aero O&M, IRM and IPB manuals to add awareness; SL revision planned for 1Q20.

Universal Power
Turbine (UPT)
Applicable to: SAC DLE

Universal Power Turbine Base

Plus  

New +G4  
What is it?
AVAILABLE TO QUOTE
• UPT is the new LSPT that GPS is going to install on
new LM2500 and TM2500 Packages starting in 2021
How does it work?
• UPT provides improved power output and heat rate Expected performance comparison
primarily 50 Hz operation without requiring a
reduction gear (3000 rpm PT speed). It also provides
some improvement for 60 Hz operation at 3600rpm
PT speed
• UPT does maintain overall Gas Turbine length to
enable it to fit into the same package size as the
existing Low Speed Power Turbine (LSPT, aka 6-pack)
Customer benefits
• Increased power with the same GG
• Better efficiency
Asset modification
• On Engine: TMF and Piping
• Package: Collector, Diffuser/Tunnel, TRF mounting
