FOREWORD

This Self-Learning Kit ( SLK ) is primarily designed to address the need to;

- augment the issue on congestion in urban areas


- help pupils who are enrolled but are habitually absent;
- provide an off- school approach to those living in disaster- prone areas;
- promote self- discipline;
- help distance learners assimilate the content by reading and working
through the instructions;
- give chance to chronically- illed pupils
- develop critical thinking in handling of study materials on one’s own
- let pupils work on topics that they have missed out on due to
participation in contests (academic and co-curricular activities); and;

It specifically aims to help Grade I pupils who are academically-challenged


to let them cope up on the topic about the USE OF DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS
IN SENTENCES (MT1GA-II g-h-1.3.1) as a means of remediation and let them work
at their own pace and at their own time.

USE OF DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS IN SENTENCES

I. WHAT HAPPENED?

You have already learned how to use the demonstrative pronouns

THIS and THAT which are used to modify singular nouns.

This is used to point out something close by or near the speaker.

For example:

This ball is new.

That is used to point out something farther away.

For example:

That kite is mine?

II. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

Now you will learn how to use the demonstrative pronouns THESE and
THOSE which are used to modify plural nouns.

You have already learned how to use the demonstrative pronouns THIS and THAT
which are used to modify singular nouns.

This; that; these; those; = they substitute nouns.

= they modify nouns

This and That is used for singular nouns.

These and Those is used for plural nouns.

When the nouns they replace can be understood from the context. They also indicate whether they are replacing singular or
plural words and give the location of the object:

These is used if the person is pointing out something close by or near.

Those is used if the person is pointing out something farther away.

For example:

These balloons are for you.

These are for you.

Those pots are new.


Those are new.

Another example

You take these books and I'll take those.

("Those" refers to bags that are at a distance from the speaker.)
