4.0 PROCEDURE

A. General

The following procedures show how to perform fiber optic inspection and cleaning.

WARNING: IF THE EQUIPMENT IS ENERGIZED, THE INVISIBLE LIGHT FROM AN OPTICAL

FIBER SOURCE CAN BE SUFFICIENTLY INTENSE TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE
EYES. BEFORE THE CONNECTOR OR TERMINI ARE EXAMINED, ENSURE
THAT THE POWER TO THE EQUIPMENT IS SET TO THE OFF CONDITION AND
THE FIBER IS DISCONNECTED FROM BOTH ENDS.

B. Procedure for Inspection Fiber Optic End Face.

CAUTION: WHEN INSPECTING THE FIBER OPTIC END FACE, ENSURE THAT THE
FIBER OPTIC CONTACT AND THE INSPECTION PROBE IS PROPERLY
ALIGNED. IF NOT ALIGNED, DAMAGE TO THE FIBER OPTIC CONTACT
CAN OCCUR.

(1) If required, remove power from the applicable LRUs.

(2) Connect the fiber optic inspection probe to the fiber optic inspection display unit. See Table 3.

(3) Select and attached the applicable adapter and tip to the fiber optic inspection probe. See
Table 3.

(4) If required, select a guide for the LRU to be examined and mate it to the connector.

(5) Examine the end face of the fiber optic using 200x magnification or higher.

NOTE: Software can be used as an aid to find the location and size of the damage or
contamination, but must not be used as the authority to accept or reject the cable
assembly.

(6) If the end face of the optical fiber has unsatisfactory damage, replace the LRU. See section
2.B. and 2.C. for definition and damage limits.

(7) If the end face of the optical fiber has unsatisfactory unwanted materials. Perform the
following. See section 2.B. and 2.D. for definition and unwanted material limits.

(a) Perform cleaning with the dry method. See paragraph 4.C.

(b) Repeat step 4.B.(5). to reinspect fiber optic end face.

(c) If the end face of the fiber optic cable still has unsatisfactory unwanted material, steps (a)
and (b) may be repeated.

(d) If unable to remove the unwanted material using the dry method. Perform cleaning with
the wet method. See paragraph 4.D.

(e) Repeat step 4.B.(5). to reinspect fiber optic end face.

(f) If unsatisfactory unwanted material cannot be removed, replace the LRU.

C. Procedure to clean Fiber Optic End Face with Dry Method

CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN USING THE SWAB OVER THE END FACE OF THE FIBER
OPTIC CONTACT. TOO MUCH FORCE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.

(1) Select and put on protective equipment.

NOTE: Clean hands are satisfactory alternative to the protective equipment.

(2) There are two (2) dry methods. Select the method appropriate for the LRU to be cleaned.

(a) Dry Method using swabs.

(b) Dry Method using wipes.

(3) Dry method using swabs

(a) If necessary, remove alignment sleeve of LRU to be cleaned.

(b) Select an appropriate swab for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.

(c) Roll or twist the swab over the end face of the fiber optic contact.

NOTE: Do not reuse swab. Discard swab after single use.

(d) Reinspect fiber optic end face. See Section 4.B

(e) If removed, reinstall alignment sleeve.

(4) Dry method using wipes

(a) If necessary, remove alignment sleeve of LRU to be cleaned.

(b) Select a dry wipe for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.

(c) Wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction.

NOTE: Wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the wipe is used.

(d) Discard wipe after use.

(e) Reinspect fiber optic end face. See section 4.B.

(f) If removed, reinstall alignment sleeve.

D. Procedure to clean Fiber Optic End Face with Wet Method

WARNING: ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL IS FLAMMABLE. MAKE SURE THAT THE QUANTITY

OF SOLVENT IS NOT MORE THAN THE QUANTITY THAT IS NECESSARY TO
CLEAN THE FIBER OPTIC END FACE.

(2) There are three (3) wet method. Select the method appropriate for the LRU to be cleaned.

(a) Wet method using pre-saturated wipes.

(b) Wet method using isopropyl alcohol and dry wipes.

(c) Wet method using isopropyl alcohol and swabs.

(3) Wet method using pre-saturated wipes.

(a) If necessary, remove alignment sleeve of LRU to be cleaned.

(b) Select the pre-saturated wipe and a dry wipe for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.

(c) With the pre-saturated wipe, wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction.

NOTE: The pre-saturated wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the
wipe is used.
