1.0 GENERAL
The following document describes the Fiber Optic satisfactory limits and describes procedures to
perform fiber optic inspection and cleaning for LRUs with fiber optic mating ends. The LRUs include,
but are not limited to:
(b) Crack – Structural defect that goes into the material of the end face.
(2) Table 1. Damage Limits for the End Face of a Fiber Optic Contact describes the limit for each
type of damage.
NOTE: A damage that is equal to or less than the limit is satisfactory. A damage that is
greater than the limit is unsatisfactory and unserviceable. If unserviceable damage
is found on a fiber optic contact, the LRU has to be repaired or replaced.

4.0 PROCEDURE
A. General
The following procedures show how to perform fiber optic inspection and cleaning.
CAUTION: WHEN INSPECTING THE FIBER OPTIC END FACE, ENSURE THAT THE
FIBER OPTIC CONTACT AND THE INSPECTION PROBE IS PROPERLY
ALIGNED. IF NOT ALIGNED, DAMAGE TO THE FIBER OPTIC CONTACT
CAN OCCUR.
(2) Connect the fiber optic inspection probe to the fiber optic inspection display unit. See Table 3.
(3) Select and attached the applicable adapter and tip to the fiber optic inspection probe. See
Table 3.
(4) If required, select a guide for the LRU to be examined and mate it to the connector.
(5) Examine the end face of the fiber optic using 200x magnification or higher.
NOTE: Software can be used as an aid to find the location and size of the damage or
contamination, but must not be used as the authority to accept or reject the cable
assembly.
(6) If the end face of the optical fiber has unsatisfactory damage, replace the LRU. See section
2.B. and 2.C. for definition and damage limits.
(a) Perform cleaning with the dry method. See paragraph 4.C.
(c) If the end face of the fiber optic cable still has unsatisfactory unwanted material, steps (a)
and (b) may be repeated.
(d) If unable to remove the unwanted material using the dry method. Perform cleaning with
the wet method. See paragraph 4.D.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN USING THE SWAB OVER THE END FACE OF THE FIBER
OPTIC CONTACT. TOO MUCH FORCE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
(2) There are two (2) dry methods. Select the method appropriate for the LRU to be cleaned.
(b) Select an appropriate swab for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.
(c) Roll or twist the swab over the end face of the fiber optic contact.
(b) Select a dry wipe for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.
(c) Wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction.
NOTE: Wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the wipe is used.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN USING THE SWAB OVER THE END FACE OF THE FIBER
OPTIC CONTACT. TOO MUCH FORCE CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
(2) There are three (3) wet method. Select the method appropriate for the LRU to be cleaned.
(b) Select the pre-saturated wipe and a dry wipe for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.
(c) With the pre-saturated wipe, wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction.
NOTE: The pre-saturated wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the
wipe is used.
(e) With a dry wipe, wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction.
NOTE: The dry wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the wipe is used.
(g) Repeat step (5) and (6) if the fiber optic contact is still wet.
(b) Select a dry wipe and alcohol for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.
(c) Put a small amount of alcohol on the dry wipe to make it moist.
(d) Wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction over the moistened area.
NOTE: The wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the wipe is used.
(f) With a new dry wipe, wipe the end face of the fiber optic contact in one direction.
NOTE: The dry wipe may be used again, ensure that a clean section of the wipe is used.
(h) Repeat step (f) and (g) if the fiber optic contact is still wet.
(b) Select a swab and alcohol for the LRU to be clean. See Table 4.
(e) With a new dry swab, roll or twist the swab on the end face of the fiber optic contact.
(f) Repeat step (e) if the fiber optic contact is still wet.
