Media
 Refers to all electronic or digital means and print or artistic visuals used to transmit
messages (NAMLE – National Association for Media Literacy Education)
 This definition leads us to its etymology, meaning “medium”, “channel”, or “method”
Media serves/functions us to Helps us spread information in different forms and devices.
Helps improve the way we communicate with other people, especially those who are very far
from us. Information and communication goes hand in hand with media because these are the
core concepts of what media actually is.It is our means of communication such as print,
media and new media (internet) that reach or influence people widely. Information and

Literacy means the ability to; competence or knowledge in a specified area.

MEDIA LITERACY  a person’s skills or abilities to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and
act using all forms of communication according to the NAMLE (National Association for
Media Literacy Education).
Media Literacy is the ability to exercise critical thinking when analyzing different forms of
media.
Media Literacy is an awareness of the impact of media.
Media Literacy is an understanding of the process of mass communication.
Media Literacy involves strategies for analyzing and discussing media messages.
Media Literacy is an understanding of media context as a text that provides insights into our
culture and our lives.
Media Literacy is the ability to enjoy, understand and appreciate media content.
Media Literacy is an understanding of the ethical and moral obligations of media
practitioners.
Media Literacy is about the development of appropriate and effective production skills.

How can you say that you are a media literate individual?
 You can analyze and evaluate the logical connection between ideas. (You are
assigned to report a certain topic so as a media literate individual, you are going to
retrieve information using computer, download a related video for the report and
use it alongside your PowerPoint presentation)
 You can understand the complex messages from different forms of media.
 You can understand the significant role of media in our society and how largely it
influences its users. (You can discern what information is factual, truthful and
objective through critical thinking).
 You can think independently and make your own opinion instead of relying on
what the media dictates.

Why media literacy is important?


 You get protection from pressures from advertising and other media forms
to smoke, drink, use drugs or eat unhealthy foods.
 You are also able to build communication skills and you are encouraged to
consider multiple interpretations of media messages.
 You can improve media use habits such as changing ritualistic viewing
behaviors as well as media use habits of the family.

Media Literacy is not media bashing; the goal is not to ridicule the media. Media are
dominant forces of our culture and an integral part of your life as students. Media should be
evaluated fairly, not judge.
Media Literacy is also no magic potion; it will not instantly solve all of society’s problems.
But it is an effective armor for resisting manipulation and keeping an intelligent view on the
images and messages that are a part of media and youth culture.
As you practice, media literacy skills at home, remember that the heart of media literacy lies
in the child-parent discussions.

INFORMATION + LITERACY
INFORMATION LITERACY:
Information pertains to specific data acquired for a specific purpose.
Gathering information or data depends upon the person’s need.
Information Literacy is the skill that allows a person to recognize when information is
needed and how he will be able to access, locate, evaluate and use it effectively.
Information Literacy let’s you distinguish which among the sources of information are
relevant.
Information Literacy means an individual will be able to recognize and classify the
different forms of media which can be used to secure relevant and substantial information.
Information Literacy can aid students in developing effective research skills essential in
enriching their knowledge and enhancing their comprehension.
Information Literacy is important in all disciplines and all levels of education.
Through Information Literacy, learner is able to gather essential information that he or she
can use to expand his or her knowledge.
Information literacy refers to how a person is able to look for relevant information from
various media with the help of technology.

Technology can be defined as the systematic application of one’s art or skill for a practical
purpose.
Technology uses scientific knowledge and computer skills to develop machinery and
equipment needed by various industries.
Media is partly about technology.
Since the digital age is characterized by the way we process information and communication
through the computer technology, it is important to develop our computer literacy skills as
well.
Computer Literacy covers the set of skills, attitudes and knowledge necessary to understand
and operate the basic functions of information and communications technologies including
devices and tools (personal computers, laptops, cellphones).
Computer Literacy – hardware, software, application literacy
Hardware Literacy means knowing on how to use the basic computer or laptop features and
functions.
Software Literacy means learning on how to use various kinds of application software
packages (word processing, spreadsheet, graphic packages, PowerPoint)
Application Literacy means having the knowledge of, and the skills necessary to efficiently
use various special purpose software packages that are on the market.
Digital (Technology) Literacy is the ability to use digital technology, communication tools
or networks to locate, evaluate, use and create information.
Digital (Technology) Literacy is the ability to understand and use information in multiple
formats from a wide range of sources when presented via computers.
Digital (Technology) Literacy refers to the person’s ability to perform tasks effectively in a
digital environment.
Digital (Technology) Literacy includes the ability to read and interpret media, reproduce
data and images through digital manipulation and evaluate and apply new knowledge gained
from digital environments.
Digital (Technology) pertains to how an individual utilizes technology to communicate and
send information through different media platforms.
Knowing how to use technology of today is necessary so we can adopt to and cope with our
present environment. Media is partly about technology. Since the digital age is characterized

According to UNESCO Media and Information Literacy, 2013


“a set of skills that empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create
as well as share information and media content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical,
effective and ethical way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional, and
societal activities.”
