Learning Competencies:
1. Contrast indigenous media to the more common sources of information such as library,
internet, etc.

LIBRARY is a place where literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials are kept for use but not
for sale.
TYPES:
 Academic - colleges and universities
 Public - cities and towns of all types
 School - kindergarten to Grade 12 students
 Special - specialized environments ( hospitals, corporations, military, private business,
government)

INDIGENOUS MEDIA
Indigenous – native or local or originating or produced naturally in a particular region or locality.
Indigenous Knowledge (IK) – knowledge that is unique to a specific culture or society. Most often it
is not written down.
Indigenous communication – transmission of information through local channels or forms. It is a
means by which a culture is preserved, handed down and adapted.
ORAL TRADITION
 Legend – fiction that tells about the origin of something (ex: Phil. Legend about Pineapple)
 Folktale – similar to a legend but it is narration about the characteristics of the time and place
in which the story is told.
 Epic – tells about the heroic adventure of the main character that sometimes possesses
extraordinary powers
 Mythology – similar to a legend and folktale but it focuses more on creation. It tells also how
lives or mortals or humans are influenced by God.

CHARACTERISTICS:
 Oral Tradition of communication
 Store information in memories
 Information exchange is face to face
 Information are contain within the border of the community

INTERNET (Interconnected Network) is a global computer network providing a variety of


information and communicating facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized
communication protocols.
