Macbeth Act 2 Notes

Scene 1
Page 49-
Banquo talks about heavy summons. He talks about his thoughts and dreams. The
witches’ words are heavily on his mind. Fleance is Banquo’s son.
Page 51-
The witches are the weird sisters. Banquo is dreaming of the witches. Their words
are on his mind. Macbeth says that he does not think about the witches, but we
know he does. He is lying to Banquo. Banquo, the servant, and Fleance have all
left. This leaves Macbeth there to talk to himself. Macbeth is seeing things. He is
seeing a dagger floating out in front of him, and he imagines that the handle is
pointing towards his hand. He is not okay. He is hallucinating.
Page 53-
There is a lot of pressure on Macbeth. He is hallucinating and thinking about this
dagger. Macbeth takes out a physical dagger, but he is still seeing one floating in
front of him. Now, he is seeing blood on that floating dagger although he has not
even injured Duncan at all. He is still thinking about whether he should kill
Duncan or not. Then, he hears the bell signaling that it is time to do it. He knows it
is time to go, and he is preparing to do so.

Scene 2
Page 55-
Lady Macbeth is starting to become crazy, she is wanting the power, and she is
becoming greedy. She is in charge of everything in this murder. She has been
drinking the same thing she was getting the guards drunk with, and now she thinks
that she is calmer and braver. Macbeth comes back in after the murder of Duncan.
Lady Macbeth is afraid that the guards woke up before the murder was done, and
that Macbeth had trouble finding the daggers. Since Duncan looked like her father,
she could not kill him herself. If he would not have looked like that, she would
have done it.
Page 57-
Donalbain is also Duncan’s son and he is there too. Macbeth brought the daggers
back rather than leaving them with the guards. Macbeth could not pronounce
Amen since he is a sinner, a murderer. The guilt of the murder is getting to him, so
he could not even say Amen. Macbeth is saying that he shall sleep no more, since
he is feeling so guilty. He can not get a good night’s sleep since he is so worked up
about the murder.
Page 59-
Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to go get water and clean his hands of the blood.
Then, Lady Macbeth sees that Macbeth had brought the daggers with him. She tells
him to take them back, but he said that he could not. She goes off on him and then
offers to take the daggers back to the room where he should have left them to begin
with. She takes them back and gets blood all over her hands too.
