Health Science Program Learning Outcome #1

Spring 2021
As a result of the Health Science Program Learning Outcomes I was able to Identify

issues and trends in health care delivery systems and public health areas and implement solutions

to better health care services to individuals and ethnically and culturally diverse populations.

This is so as in my Nursing 356 Vulnerable Populations class, I acquired this ability to identify

issues in the healthcare system and find solutions for them. My artifact is a presentation on

Oxnard’s Vulnerable Population which has fulfilled this learning outcome. Before I started the

Health Science major my knowledge of this pathway was limited. My knowledge has since

changed when I first started the Health science major and has flourished. I now know so much

more and have benefited from it because I feel prepared for real life situations that will or have

already occurred. Specifically with this class I didn’t know how so many issues can link from

one thing to another in low income towns but now I am proud to say I do and I also know how

some of those issues could be resolved.

My academic ability has incredibly developed over the time in this program. This is so as

this artifact had not only prepared me for real life situations but has expanded my knowledge of

why these issues have occurred. This artifact has also taught me how to adequately look up

sources that are credible/reliable and how to correctly cite that information. This artifact also

taught me to be organized with my information as it is important to display information in a

certain order to not only have your audience intrigued but having this order helps one understand

why there are vulnerable populations to begin with. It also helps others understand the reasons

behind these vulnerable populations and why there hasn’t been much help in these populations

although there are small solutions that can make a huge difference. An example of this is having

less fast-food restaurants in vulnerable populations, this will decrease the amount of those obese

in the area. Those who live in these vulnerable populations are low income so having fast food
restaurants near them is attractive to them because the food is cheap and quick to eat. Another

example of finding a solution in these vulnerable populations that can be fixed by the healthcare

system is opening health classes for kids and adults that can enlighten them on how to have

healthy diets and lifestyles. This will decrease several health problems in these vulnerable

populations.

Gaps in my knowledge that I would like to pursue if I further my education is learning

more about the community and how the healthcare system has power to a make change in them.

Learning more about communities can help to start changes as it sets up a base. This can be

learned by taking sociology classes and being more involved in your own community. By doing

this is will allow me to take note of how different people socialize and interact with one another

and learning critical information about them. This will also allow me to do my own research and

be able to figure out several solutions which may work to help communities change for the better

in the health care aspect.

In conclusion, the Heath Science Program Learning Outcome of Identifying issues and

trends in health care delivery systems and public health areas and implement solutions to better

health care services to individuals and ethnically and culturally diverse populations was fulfilled

for me. This program has not only taught me to be able to do this but make me more aware and

interested in the way the heath care delivery system works. There are some issues in the way the

health care system works but this can be changed with the new generations of students are

interested in this field.
