Refining

We are a leader in the petroleum refining market, having designed

or constructed more than 60 grassroots refineries and over 1000 refining
units in the past 50 years. Our extensive knowledge and expertise
KBR, along with its JV partners, provided a comprehensive
in key petroleum refining processes, such as residuum upgrading, front-end loading package, innovative project execution
fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and hydroprocessing, provides a full strategies and EPC services for Petro-Canada’s refinery

clean fuels production.

Our state-of-the-art technology, coupled with our extensive experience in the refining processes, represent our long-standing
commitment to provide leading-edge, cost-effective solutions for diverse refining needs.

Major challenges facing our clients today include processing higher quantities of heavy oils and converting bottoms into
valuable transport fuels. We draw upon our extensive experience to find the most cost-effective solutions. By using
advanced process technology and engineering methods, we can keep capital costs to a minimum without affecting operating
costs and flexibility.

Resid Upgrading
Residuum Oil Supercritical Extract (ROSE™)

Our ROSE technology is used by refineries and heavy oil upgraders

worldwide. It provides our clients a reliable, cost-effective, energy-efficient
option for achieving maximum yields for high-value transport fuels while
reducing the production of low-value fuel oil.

ROSE technology is highly reliable and our ROSE units regularly achieve
an on-stream factor of over 95 percent. ROSEMAX™ internals contribute
to this reliability with all original installations still in operation since 1995.

Over 45 ROSE licenses have been sold to date. Continuous technology

development and extensive expertise in design have enabled us to reduce
the total installed cost of ROSE units.

ROSE uses supercritical solvent extraction which reduces energy usage by

over 50 percent when compared to conventional solvent deasphalting.

AQUAFORM™

AQUAFORM technology is an advanced asphaltene pelletization process As demonstrated at Marathon’s Ashland ROSE unit, our
technology offers a cost-effective option for maximizing
that produces uniformly sized particles that can be easily transported to yields of high-value transport fuels.
remote locations using conventional transportation methods.
Fluid Catalytic Cracking
Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) converts heavy, low-value hydrocarbons into more valuable light fuels such as gasoline and
liquefied petroleum gas.

Working together with our alliance partner, ExxonMobil, we bring together over 120 years of experience and are
constantly pursuing new process improvements to catalytic cracking operations.

We offer unmatched FCC solutions that are low in capital cost, offer long term reliability, superior operability,
environmental compliance and advanced technology.

Our Orthoflow FCC unit utilizes a one-piece, self-supporting converter that makes for a compact, reliable FCC unit.
In addition, our unit minimizes plot space requirements, investment cost and turnaround maintenance.

The Orthoflow FCC process offers maximum performance while also being easier to operate and more flexible
than competing processes with such features as ATOMAX-2™ Feed Injection, Closed Cyclones Riser Termination,
DynaFlux™ Spent Catalyst Stripping and Riser Quench.

Unique to the Orthoflow FCC design, Lo-NOx counter-current catalyst regeneration minimizes NOx emissions with
multi-point distribution of spent catalyst at the top of the regenerator bed while also minimizing afterburning and
maintaining flexibility to operate in either complete CO2 combustion or partial burn.

Hydroprocessing
Hydrotreating and hydrocracking have long been relied
upon to meet the need for conversion to transportation
fuels and improving the quality to meet more stringent
gasoline and diesel specifications.

We support the marketing and engineering of

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE)
hydroprocessing technologies through the EMRE and
KBR Hydroprocessing Technology Alliance. Our alliance
features the full range of hydrotreating and hydrocracking
technologies to provide innovative solutions to meet the
refiner’s needs at the lowest capital and operating costs.

At the ExxonMobil FCC project in Altona, Australia, we proved that

FCC solutions offer long term reliability and low capital costs.
