In this lab, emphasize Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with Mathematics). Using models, tables, and graphs,
students will compare proportional relationships and nonproportional relationships.
Display this table on the board. Ask students to find for each pair of x and y values.
Ask:
Is y proportional to x? Explain. Yes; the ratio of y to x is constant for all corresponding values of x and y.
Pairs Check Have students work independently to complete Steps 1 and 2. Then have them pair
up with a partner to check their results. Have students show the change in y-values for Albert (+2, +2, +2) and
Bianca (+3, +3, +3) to determine what the y-value would be for the input value of 0 to determine if the line passes
through the origin. 1, 7
Pairs Check Extend the comment number x to 8, 15, 27, to determine the number of replies y
continuing at the same rate. Have students write an equation for Albert and Bianca for any comment number x.
1, 4, 8 Albert: y = 2x; Bianca: y = 3x 2

Levels of Complexity
The levels of the exercises progress from 1 to 3, with Level 1 indicating the lowest level of complexity.
Three Stay, One Stray Arrange students in groups of 4 to complete Exercises 1–4. Have one
student stray to a new group to discuss their original group’s findings and to discuss the ideas and results of the
new group. The stray student returns to their original group to discuss any new ideas or results and to finalize their
group results. 1
Trade-a-Problem Have students work individually to complete Exercise 5. Then have them trade
their real-world scenarios with another student. Each student checks the other student’s scenario to determine if
the relationship is truly proportional and if their alteration makes it nonproportional. Have students discuss and
resolve any differences. 1, 4, 6
Students should be able to answer “HOW are proportional and nonproportional linear relationships alike?
HOW are they different?” Check for student understanding and provide guidance, if needed.
Extending the Concept Which equation represents a function that is a direct variation, y = 5x or y = 5x + 3? y =
5x
