Body Structures that Help Animals Adapt and Survive

Animals are found almost everywhere. Each animal has a distinct body structure adapted in response to
environmental pressures. These body structures are used for survival and adaptation. An adaptation is the process of
developing structure or behavior that helps an organism survive in its environment. Animals have body structures that
help them adapt to their specific habitat or the place where animals live.

Animals have body structures that enable them to live in water and on land. Like for example, animals can live in
water (aquatic animals) because they have scales, outside skeleton, shells and gills. Scales are used for protection from
diseases and harmful objects and for swimming. Most fishes have scales. Lobsters and shrimps have outside skeleton
called exoskeleton while mussels and oysters have shells. Octopus and squid have tentacles to get food. To breathe, gills are
organs responsible for breathing in the water.

On the other hand, animals also have structures that help them adapt on land (terrestrial animals). Some animals
like dogs, cats, and monkeys are covered with fur to keep them warm. Others like birds are covered with feathers for them
to have ability to fly. Some like worms have smooth skin for breathing. In general, most of animals have body coverings for
protection. They also have parts for movement like legs for walking, swimming, running and wings for flying. Most of
them have lungs for breathing.

Amphibians such toads, frogs, salamanders are cold-blooded animals. They spend part of their life on land and
part in water. Their bodies are covered with soft skin. Amphibians breathe through their skin and lungs.

Reptiles like snake, lizards, crocodile are also cold-blooded animals. Most reptiles can live their entire lives on
land and reproduce in dry habitats. Some types of reptiles are adapted to living in water, but even these species come onto
land to lay their eggs. Their bodies are covered with scales. Reptiles regularly shed the outer layer of their skin to grow.
They also breath through their lungs.

Food is a basic need for the animals to survive. Body parts such as paws, claws, and mouthparts like beak and
teeth are used to get food. Others use sticky tongue, movable jaws and sucking tubes . It can be said that animals with the
same mouth parts eat the same food. For example, those animals with flat teeth like carabao, cow and rabbit eat grass.
Those that have sharp pointed teeth like lion and tiger eat meat or other animals. Other animals like bears (grizzly bear
and polar bear) have both types of teeth that they use in eating both plants and meat.

Many animals have the color of the environment they live in. Some animals protect themselves against their
enemies through protective coloration called camouflage. This allows animals to blend with their surroundings. Other
animals imitate the shape, smell, tastes, color or even sounds of other animals. This behavior is called mimicry. Most
insects secrete chemicals that they use to protect themselves. Other animals protect their kind by being in group.
