OTHER DANCE FORMS

HIP-HOP DANCE
Hip-hop dance refers to street dance style primarily performed to hip-hop music
or that have developed as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles, primarily,
breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s ang made popular by dance
crews in the United States. The television show Soul Train and the 1980s film Breakin’, Beat
Street, and Wild Style showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages. These gave
hip-hop its mainstream exposure. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based
version of hip=hop which is sometimes called new style., and hip-hop influenced style of jazz
dance called jazz-funk. Dancers who were trained classically developed these studio styles in
order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because
of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.

Commercialization of hip-hop dance continue into the 1990s and 2000s with the
production of several other television shows and movies such as: The Grind, Planet B-Boy, Rize,
Street Dance 3D, The LXD, a web series. Though the dance is established in entertainment,
including mild representation in theater, it maintains a strong presence in urban neighborhoods
which has led to the creation of street dance derivatives Memphis, jookin, krumping, and turfing.

Hip-hop differs from other forms of dance because it is often “freestyle”

(improvisational) in nature. Hip-hop dance crews often engage in freestyle dance competitions
which are colloquially referred to as “battles”. Battles, crews, are freestyling identifies with this
style. Hip-hop dance can be form of entertainment or a hobby. It can also be a way to stay active
in competitive dance and a way to make a living by dancing professionally.

4
Hip-hop is advance style, usually danced to hip-hop music, that evolved from the hip-hop
culture. The first dance associated with hip-hop was breakdancing. While breakdancing consists
primarily of moves executed close to the ground, the majority of hip=hop moves are done
standing up.

Hip-hop developed from several cultures, including, jazz, rock, tap, and American and
Latino cultures. Hip-hop is a very energetic form of dancing. It is unique in that it allows its
dancers to perform with freedom of movement, adding in their own personalities. The hip-hop
culture is influenced by the following five elements:

THE FIVE ELEMENTS OF HIP-HOP

Together, the five elements of hip-hop create the foundation of the hip-hop culture. These
elements include Rap, Dj, Graffiti, Break-dance, and Beat-box, which is the latest addition to the
former four elements.

1. Rap (MC’ing)
Rap is spoken over the accompaniment of “mixed” music. In hip-hop there are different
kinds of rap-political rap, rap accompanied by jazz, alternative rap, and more. The most popular
style of rapping is the “gangster rap”, describing the close proximity between rappers and the
criminal lifestyle.

2. The DJ
Unlike electronic music, you create your own music live, by mixing records, scratching,
and improving.

3. Graffiti
Hip-hop culture warmly accepted graffiti. Graffiti is mostly drawn or written illegally on
public, property. Its artists’ purposes are usually for artistic expression, the marking of gang

5
territories, and public protest. For example before the Gulf War, the mayor of Paris called on
Graffiti artists to draw on a certain wall, protesting the war in Iraq.

4. Break Dance
Break-dancing is a kind of acrobatic dance, important to the foundation of hip-hop. The
character of the dance is sharp and short movements combined with flowing and wave-like
motion, along with difficult floor acrobatics structured on balance techniques, and spinning on
body parts such as the head, shoulders, stomach. A famous element of the break-dance is the
“moon walk”, one of Michael Jackson signature moves. Break-dance music is electronic
combined with “scratching”. This style was most popular during the 80s, when one would find
break-dancers at street corners and city-squares.

5, Beat-boxing
Besides the four elements of hip-hop, beat-boxing is viewed by many people as the fifith
element of hip-hop. Beat-boxing is the artform of making beats and music with the mouth. The
term beat-box is taken from the name of the first drum machines. Its founders are Dog E Fresh
and Buffy and Biz Marqi. Beat-boxing was extremely popular in the ‘80s but lost its identity in
the ‘90s, and is slowly returning now to the ring.

Unlike many hip-hop dances, house and rave dances are usually heralded more “fun”
than “competitive” although most street dances start like so before being adopted for competition
or any other purpose since nobody legally owns them. Generally dances like the Melbourne
Shuffle are not applied as a dance for battling, rather for dancing in the crowd at a rave party.
This distinguishes rave dance form partner and competitive street dance forms. However. Many
people do perform rave as an expressively competitive dance.

6
HIP-HOP DANCE STEPS
Hip-hop dance steps require skill and experience to perfect. Hip-hop dancers practice a
lot in order to master basic steps and movements that appear simple when performed. Dancers
with a good sense of rhythm find it easier to learn hip-hop steps.

LEARNING HIP-HOP
Hip-hop classes are popping up dance studios around the country. Teens are particularly
interested in learning how to dance like dancers they see on MTV and music videos. Dance
teachers have capitalized on this interest and have started incorporating hip-hop and
breakdancing classes into their curriculums. Many people with roots in hip-hop culture feel that
hip-hop dancing should not be formally “taught”. They feel that teaching specific moves takes
away from the originality factor that hip-hop possesses.

STREET DANCE
Street dance is formally known as vernacular dance. It refers to dance styles which are
regardless of country of origin, and that evolved outside of dance studios in any available open
space such as block parties, dance parties, nightclubs, parks, school yards, and streets. They are
often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with other
dancers and spectators. These dances are a part of the vernacular culture of the area that they
originated from. Two examples of street dance include B-boying or (breakdancing), which
originated in New York City, and Melbourne Shuffle which came from Melbourne, Australia.

HISTORY

8
Traditional jazz dance, having been introduced since the late 19 th century, is perhaps one
of the oldest street dances of urban America. Street dance is often considered folk dance. Since
many concepts of urbanization have existed for a long time back in history, the point of which
folk dance is to be considered a more historical street dance is often unanswered. Street dance
and folk dance are distinguished by the terms they were introduced for. The term “street dance ”
was believed to the existed since the beginning of the early 20th century. At the same time, Afro-
American vernacular dance was becoming the most popular in the western world. Clogging is
thought to be considered a very early form o street dance, since it was in the streets, factories and
dance parties around 18th century. Dancers considered to have been part were the UK, Western
Europe and Appalachian urban counter cultures at the time.
Hip-hop dance style B-boying and the funk styles popping and locking are some of the
most popular street dance styles in African American culture. Those forms are the most
prominently practiced street dances. These street dance styles are so common that
commercialized versions have been professionally developed and choreographed for dance
routines in electronic, hip-hop, pop, and R&B music, videos. B-boying bring about street dance
crew culture, whereby the dance crews would learn various street dance styles for competition
and impression. These street crews usually perform in outdoor jams, leading to further styles of
hip-hop dance. New Jack Swing also known as Swing beat was created in the ‘90s dance scene,
which is also a respected style of street dance.
Another example of a street dance is “house dance”, which is prominently danced to
house music. House dance evolved out of Chicago clubs but grew and developed in the clubs of
New York. Due to the modern mainstream popularity of clubs, street, and fad dances were
practiced in outdoor spaces. Many rave dances are also street dances. The majority of rave
dances are street dance styles since rave culture is prominently and underground movement.
Rave culture. Like hip-hop culture, is greatly diverse and there are many different music genres
which have individually prominent vernacular dance styles. In circulated around a consistent
rhythm and flow. Street dance styles like popping, roboting, and tutting, due to their futuristic-
psychedelic theme and movements, have been widely adopted by the electronic dance
community and influenced dances such as Liquiding. From of the electronic dance community,
street dances like Electro Dancing and Jumpstyle, a kind of a rave dance came out.

9
PUNK DANCE
Punk dance also known as trash dance, or simply trashing is a form of street dance
performed on the spot in big crowds. The punk dance is considered a fad dance, and its origins
also make it a street dance. It started from the punk rock community. Dance styles are most
popular in the hardcore styled punk rock community. Dance styles are most popular in the
hardcore styled music concerts, as well as nightclubs. Hardcore dancing is the most modern form
of punk dance.

Adaptations to these street dances are now practiced at both dance studios and other
spaces. Dance studios often dub the commercial adaptations as street dance. Some schools use
street dance as form of physical education. Other examples are street dance influenced line
dances such as the Cha-cha Slide and Cupid Shuffle. Line dances may be considered street,
vernacular, or folk dances. Which usually require professional instruction or choreography, and
integrate moves derived from studio dance styles.

EVOLUTION
Street dance has evolved between people in a social environment, although it cannot
always be determined as to how they actually evolve between people. As a person comes up with
a move that apparently looks good to another person, the effect is that the other person cannot
absolutely perform that move the same way as the other person, thus leading the dancers to
create their own style or entirely new moves based on it.

There is a small difference between entirely freestyle or improvisational dance invented

by a single person even if it is based on the dance style of another person. A full street dance is a
collection of the various similar dance moves and styles collected into one practice and regarded
as the same dance. For example, when B-boying evolved out oy early hip-hop culture, people
came up with their own moves, and other practiced and regarded as the same dance. All the
moves danced to breaks in hip-hop culture were regarded as B-boying.

10
Sometimes it is possible to trace back street dance styles that were mostly pioneered by
specific persons. One example is “Locking”, which is often regarded as being started by Don
Campbell, who was a pioneer of American street dance in the 1970s. it is impossible to credit
specific people for street dances, evolve outside of professional dance environments.
