b. Analyze musical characteristics of American music through listening
activities.

A. Motivation
Class before we start our lesson for
today, I will show you a picture and Yes ma’am
guest what it depicts all about.
Ok class, what do you observe in the
picture? What do you think is their race
or what country do mostly see the people
in the picture?

B. Presentation
So, class let’s talk about the Latin
American music.
Latin American music is highly syncretic
of fusion of different music cultures (Student listening)
from Spanish, Portuguese, French-
speaking countries encompassing a wide
diversity of styles. Latin American
music refers to the music of places such
as Mexico, south America, Central
America and the Caribbean.

C. Lesson Proper
So, there are 8 distinct genres of Latin American
music these are the:
 Reggae – This musical style that
developed in Jamaica evolved from
earlier styles, such as ska and
rocksteady. Its characteristics feature is a
rhythm emphasis on beats.

 Samba -Samba is a musical and dance (Student watch the video)


genre from brazil with west African
origin. It is characterized by lively,
rhythmical movement in time.

 Bossa nava – Bossa nova is Brazilian (Student watch the video)


fusion of samba rhythm and the complex
harmonies and improvised passages of
jazz. This was popularized in the 1950s,
usually played a guitar with nylon
strings.

 Cumbia- This is a dance – oriented
musical styles that came from the coastal
region of Columbia and Panama. It
started as courtship dance among
Africans, but later was combine with the
steps of the native Americans. Many
Latin America musical styles are closely
related to its dance. (Student watch the video)

 Tango – _This dance has different


styles- Argentine, American, finish,
Tango Nuevo, and international Tango.
 Rumba – This term may refer to the
Afro- Cuban rumba is associated with
the Afro-Cuban music. The ballroom
rumba is the sensual dance performed in
social occasions and contests.
 Cha-cha – Also known as cha-cha, this
dance is introduced by Cuban composer
and violist Enrique Jorrin. It is derived
from the sound of the scraper and the
rhythm of the shuffling feet of the
dancers.
 Posodoble – Double steps is a lively
dance performed in Spain, but credited
to Latin and North America. This is
performed to music used when the
bullfighter enters the ring.
