CHAPTER 3
Refrigeration Systems

The refrigeration system provides a cool working place and accommodation

and cooled storage for reefer goods and provisions for seafarers’ onboard ship.
This chapter will learn the principle, components, operations, and troubleshooting
of a marine refrigeration system.

Learning Objectives
After studying this chapter, the learners shall be able to:
1. Describe the system and operating principle of a marine refrigeration system;
2. Describe the components of a refrigeration system;
3. Operate a refrigeration system while maintaining normal operating conditions according
to manufacturers’ manual; and
4. Maintain the refrigeration system's normal operating condition according to a
manufacturer's specification even with faults and scheduled maintenance.

Pretest

Multiple Choice: Select the correct answer from the choices given below each question. Write
the letter of your answer on the blank provided before each number.

__________ 1.) A refrigeration compressor was short cycling on the low-pressure cut-out switch,
the possible cause will be _________.
a. the system is overcharged with refrigerant
b. the system was low on refrigerant
c. suction valves were leaking slightly
d. relief valves are leaking slightly
__________ 2.) The refrigeration compressor in a water-cooled refrigeration system is short
cycling in the pressure cut-out switch. One reason for this cut-out is ________.
a. discharge valves are leaking excessively
b. discharge valves are leaking slightly
c. the high-pressure cut-out is improperly adjusted
d. the system is low on refrigerant
__________ 3.) Under normal conditions, the refrigerant enters the compressor in an operating
refrigeration system as a _________.
a. dry saturated gas
b. liquid
c. superheated gas
d. wet saturated gas
__________ 4.) Refrigerant enters the condenser as a ______________.
a. high-pressure liquid
b. high-pressure vapor
c. low-pressure vapor
d. low-pressure liquid
__________ 5.) Which of the refrigeration components does super heating of refrigerant takes
place?
a. drier
b. expansion valve
c. evaporator
d. receiver
