Acknowledgments

The support that this study received during the course of two years
cannot be adequately acknowledged in a few words. Almost the entire
program was financed through the generosity of the New York
Zoological Society, specifically the Charlotte Ordway Fonderas
Wildlife Protection Fund. Dr. F. Wayne King, formerly curator of
conservation of the society and currently director of the Florida State
Museum, conceived the study, helped establish the base camp, and
served in the important position of liaison officer between the field
crews and the society. The University of Florida provided me with a
Faculty Development Grant in 1969-70; the Florida State Museum
granted me a year's leave of absence and the use of considerable
equipment during the field work.

The completion of the study would have been impossible without the
official assistance and cooperation of Messrs. Hasan Basjarudin
Nasution, Directorate of Forestry, and Walman Sinaga, Department of
Conservation, Bogor. Without their help it would have been impossible
to study the monitor on any of the islands. Dr. Otto Soemarwoto,
National Academy of Biology, Dr. S. Somadikarta, Museum
Zoologicum Bogoriense, and especially Miss Sjamsiah Achmad,
Indonesian Institute of Sciences, were instrumental in facilitating our
research program. Brigadier Djendral Soekertijo, Bali, was particularly
helpful in making all the officials in his district aware of our presence
and of the purpose and importance of our study. Admiral Abdul Kadir,
Jakarta, shipped food to Komodo via an Indonesian naval vessel when
our usual supply boat could not serve us.

The late Mr. Hilmi Oesman, Surabaja Zoological Garden, was most
helpful in providing much information based on his numerous trips to
Komodo, as well as on his observations of lizards kept in the Surabaja
Zoo. Mr. Benjamin Galstaun, Jakarta Zoological Garden, and Drs.
Endung Dasuki and J. Busone, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, both
associated with the Jogjakarta Zoological and Botanical Gardens,
provided pertinent data on Komodo lizards maintained in the Jogja
