Writing a feature
A feature is a longer piece of writing than a news story. Features come in many different types and are
widely used in magazines, newspapers and online.

A feature will often cover an issue in greater depth than a news story would do; or it might look at an
ongoing story from a different angle.

Feature article Parts

News Story vs Feature

This table compares some of the characteristics of news stories and features. Remember that these are not
hard and fast rules. There can be overlap between the two genres.

For example, a recent news item can be covered in a news feature. Or a news article can abandon the
inverted pyramid structure to cover a human interest story using more detail and emotion.
V. ASSESMENT/EVALUATION

Find an old newspaper and cut the feature article and label its part like the example above. Put it on a long
or short bond paper. It will serve as your 1st P-Check for the 3rd Quarter.

IV. ASSIGNMENT

Search for at least Five (5) feature article and copy/write their Masthead and headline put it at the
back of your P-Check paper.
