WARNINGS!
Exposure to strong high frequency electromagnetic fields may cause thermal damage to personnel. The eye (cornea
and lens) is easily exposed.
In radio-relay communication installations, orderly setup for normal operation, the general RF radiation level will be
well below the safety limit.
In the antennas and directly in front of them the RF intensity normally will exceed the danger level, within limited
portions of space.
Dangerous radiation may be found in the neighbourhood of open waveguide flanges or horns where the power is
radiated into space.
During work within and close to the front of the antenna; make sure that transmitters will remain turned off.
Before opening coaxial - or waveguide connectors carrying RF power, turn off transmitters.
Consider any incidentally open RF connector as carrying power, until otherwise proved. Do not look into coaxial connectors at
closer than reading distance (30 cm). Do not look into an open waveguide unless you are absolutely sure that the power is
turned off.
ESD
This equipment contains components which are sensitive to "ESD" (Electro Static Discharge).
It is therefore essential that whenever disassembling the equipment and/or handling PC boards, special precautions
to avoid ESD have to be made.
These precautions include personnel grounding, grounding of work bench, grounding of tools and instruments as
well as transport and storage in special antistatic bags and boxes.
LASER
CAUTION
Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in
hazardous radiation exposure.
The optical interface must only be serviced by qualified personnel, who are aware of the hazards involved to repair
laser products.
When handling laser products the following precautions must be taken:
Before disconnecting an optical cable from the optical transmitter, the power should be switched off. If this is
not possible, the cable must be disconnected from the transmitter before it is disconnected from the receiver.
When the cable is reconnected it must be connected to the receiver before it is connected to the transmitter.
EARTHING
This equipment has a connection between the earthed conductor of the d.c. supply circuit and the earthing
conductor.
NOTE!
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15
of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the
equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio
frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful
interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense.
XCVR Software Compatibility
Alt 1
XCVRs equipped with label shown below, are pre-installed with one of the two software options as indicated on the label:
z XPAND IP
z METRO/XPAND
To reconfigure the XCVR to operated in the other mode, the procedures shown below must be followed.
In XPAND IP systems the XCVR software will be changed during first system start-up. This process is automatic, see notes below.
Note should be made on the label, indicating the new XCVR software.
XCVR Configured in XPAND IP mode
To operate in METRO/XPAND mode the system requires Software revision R10A or later of SW-EVOLUTION.
Verify that the system has SW revision R10 or later. Upgrade SW if needed. The XCVR software will be changed during first system start-up. This process is automatic, see notes below.
Note should be made on the label, indicating the new XCVR software.
Alt 2
XCVRs equipped with label shown below, requires software release >R4B00 (XPAND-IP) or R10A03 (METRO/XPAND):
These XCVRs are not recognized by systems running older software versions. If a “new” XCVR is installed in a system with “old” SW the alarm ”NEED CONFIGURATION” will be raised by the system. In order to
use these XCVRs the SW must be upgraded.
Note! During XCVR SW change the system will need several minutes to load the new SW. No progress
indication is shown. Do not switch off power during this operation.
Note! Mount the IFU-ODU cable before power is applied to the IFU.
Warning! To avoid dangerous radiation, the XCVR/ODU must be terminated to antenna/waveguide, before
power is applied to the system.
System Overview
Introduction
The Evolution Series microwave radio family is designed to transmit data rates from about 6 Mb/s to 1.6 Gbit/s, in frequency bands from 4 GHz to 40 GHz. The configuration of
capacity and modulation is configurable, giving an optimal balance between system gain and spectral efficiency. The units in the system are very flexible allowing a wide range
of capacities and features to be enabled by software.
The Evolution Series product can be configured to work in two different modes, METRO (SDH/SONET based) and XPAND (PDH based). In both modes it is possible to either
have a split mounted system with IFU and ODU or an optimized long haul system with low loss RF-branching providing the best system gain for high capacity systems. Payload
capacity on each RF channel is configurable and is enabled by SW licences. With the Universal IFU changes and upgrades can be done by the user without HW changes to the
basic IFU platform.
Available interfaces are: E1, T1, E3, DS3, STM-1/OC-3, STM-4/OC12, 100BASE-TX, Gigabit Ethernet.
The Evolution Series products can be configured in two different modes, selected by the SW license.

Features
The ODU (split-mount) can be mounted directly on the antenna, both in unprotected and protected configurations. The ODU can also be mounted on the antenna pole, using a
short flexible waveguide to the antenna.
The Universal IFU can easily be expanded from a single channel system up to a traffic node handling up to 8 ODUs. The Universal IFU contains the line interface, baseband
processing and multiplexing, management and radio interfaces.
The optional embedded ADM/DXC function provides multiplexing for user traffic into the STM-1/OC-3 or STM-4/OC-12 signal. In traffic node systems, the digital cross connect
(DXC) routes the user traffic between the various link directions without the need for cabling or external multiplexers. Chain, ring, star and mesh topologies are supported, with
individual choice of unprotected or protected (SNCP) traffic circuits. The multiplexer supports a mix of traffic types, such as E1, T1, E3, DS3 and Ethernet.
The equipment configuration, licences and the operating software version, can be stored or downloaded to a computer. When a new Supervisory Unit is inserted, the equipment
configuration can then easily be restored to the radio equipment.
System description
The Evolution Series microwave radio system comprises IFU, and an XCVR/ODU and an antenna. The IFU and XCVR are interconnected using a coaxial cable which carries
the transmit and receive user traffic, management communication between the IFU and XCVR, and the power supply to the XCVR.
IFU description
The Evolution Series Universal IFU is a 1RU high modular unit, containing 9 plug-in slots for various modules. The modular architecture with plug-in slots enables a high degree
of flexibility, easy upgrading/changing configurations and maintenance.
The Universal IFU Basic Frame is common in all configurations and up to four IFU frames can be stacked together by an IFU connection panel.
z When an SU is part of the IFU frame, it will always occupy slot 1. The Supervisory Unit is handling the configuration of all the system units as well as reporting system
status to the NMS system.
z Slot 6 houses the FAN unit, handling the ventilation and temperature management of the IFU frame.
z Slot 2and 3 house the various user traffic interfaces and optional DXC unit. The PDH and Ethernet traffic interfaces are full height and cover the upper Aux/Serv. position
as well.
z Slot 4 and 5 house the RIU unit(s). The RIU unit provides connection to the ODU and supplies power to the IFU Basic Frame with plug-in units and the ODU. If the DXC
unit is used, slot 4 and 5 can be used for traffic interfaces as well.
z Slot 7-9 house any Auxiliary or Service Channel units, such as Alarm Unit, Wayside Traffic Unit, 64 kb/s Data Channels unit and EOW unit.
All units can be replaced in the field. Non traffic carrying units can be replaced without interrupting the service.

Radio Protection Switching (RPS) operations for N+1and Hot Stand-by systems are managed by a dedicated RPS module. This RPS module interacts with system hardware resources to achieve
automatic protection switch operations based on switch criteria inputs from the individual radio channels. This module also supports manually controlled switch operations and status reporting.
Switch Section
N+1 system configurations define a single traffic direction over a single radio hop as a protection switch section. A dedicated RF channel, denoted “protection channel” (Ch. P), serves as a backup for a
number of traffic channels, denoted “regular channels”. The state of a regular channel is either “regular” or “protected”. A channel is in protected state when its traffic is carried over the hop by the
protection RF channel, otherwise it is in regular state (the traffic is carried over the hop by its own dedicated RF channel). The RPS module in a N+1 switch section is based on a Master/Slave
philosophy. The Master is located at the receive end of the hop, and has the overall responsibility for acquiring the necessary system status information and controlling how and when a protection
switchover shall be executed. The Slave is located at the transmit side of the hop and will execute actions requested by the remote-end Master. A typical action requested is to set up the “remote TX
bridge” for a specific channel. The remote TX bridge is the signal duplication route from the traffic input port of a regular channel to the Ch. P transmit path. The Master and Slave communicate over
the hop through the RPS order-wire channel, using a SOH (ETSI) / TOH (ANSI) byte in the SOH/TOH frame (MS1 or MS2).
Hot Stand-by system configurations implement local equipment protection within the network element (radio station). A protection switch section is then comprised of the duplicated transmit- and
receive-equipment required to serve one antenna. This switch section is monitored and controlled by a single RPS module. The two equipment paths are identified as Ch. 1 and Ch. 2. The protection
switch state is either “Ch. 1 active” or “Ch. 2 active”. Each traffic direction (transmit and receive) has its own set of switch criteria and its own physical switch arrangement. The system may be set up as
“Unidirectional” (radio transmit switch and baseband receive switch operates completely independent of one another) or “Bi-directional” (radio transmit switch will follow the baseband receive switch if
there is no conflicting criteria, and vice versa).
Hot Stand-by Dual Baseband system configurations implement local equipment protection for the transmit traffic direction only. In this system configuration the received signal is duplicated through the
entire equipment. (There is one Interface Baseband Board for each channel). Protection switching of the received signal must be performed by external equipment.
Switch Criteria
Automatic switch operations are initiated based on a set of switch criteria. Automatic switch criteria are individual or collections of alarms and indicators generated by the different boards/units within
the switch section.
The switch criteria are grouped into a Quality group and a Continuity group. The Quality type of criteria will request error-free (aligned) switchover while the Continuity type of criteria will request
unconditional (forced) switchover.
Quality criteria:
Low RF input level (Low RF): Originates in the Transceiver Unit and indicates that the input signal level has fallen below a specific threshold.
Early Warning (EW): Indicates that the estimated error ratio is above a specific threshold (Not used in HSB Dual Baseband system configurations)
Low BER (LBER): Indicates that the estimated error ratio is above a specific threshold (Not used in HSB Dual Baseband system configurations)
Continuity criteria:
High BER (HBER): Indicates that the estimated error ratio is above a specific threshold. (Not used in HSB Dual Baseband system configurations)
Sync loss (OOS): Indicates that either the internal OOF alarm or the internal RF_ID alarm has been asserted. (Not used in HSB Dual Baseband system configurations)
TX alarm: Indicates failure in the internal data signal connection. (N+1 system configurations only).
Interface regular port input alarm: Originates in the Interface Unit and serves as RX data input alarm for the regular input port. (Not used in HSB Dual Baseband system configurations)
Modem Board absent alarm: Empty slot is detected in the RIU slot position.
Interface Baseband Board absent alarm: Empty slot is detected in the LIU slot position.
In addition to switch criteria there are some equipment alarms related to the channel’s ability to serve traffic. If one or more of these alarms are raised the channel is not able to transmit/receive the
signal even if it is protected, so no attempt will be made to protect it:
“Protectability” criteria:
Interface protection port input alarm: Serves as RX data input alarm for the input protection port. (Not used in HSB Dual Baseband system configurations)
Interface Unit TX alarm: (N+1 system configurations only).
- Terminal system configuration: Indicates missing input signal (tributary side).
- Add/Drop Repeater system configuration: Indicates failure in the internal data signal or in the input circuitry of the LIU.
Some indicators are used in addition to the switch criteria to validate the switch operation:
Indicators:
Alignment indicator: Indicates that the data alignment function has detected identical data streams on the protection channel and regular channel, and is capable of doing an error-free (aligned)
switchover.
Transceiver state indicator: Indicates whether a radio transmitter is active or passive (Hot Stand-by system configurations only).
N+1 Systems
Transmit side:
Receive side:
Automatic switch/restore:
The RPS system can automatically perform unidirectional (RX) switch and restore operation based on detected error conditions. The following scenarios describe the basic principles of operation:
If a channel N is protectable and its error conditions has been evaluated to a level above or equal to the switch limit, the RPS checks if any other protectable channel has more severe error
conditions (a more significant need for being protected). If not, the error conditions of the protection channel is compared with the error conditions of channel N. If the error conditions of channel N
is worse, an automatic protection of channel N is performed.
If channel N is using protection and its error conditions are still above or equal to the restore limit but another channel now has worse conditions than channel N, an automatic restore of channel
N is performed followed by an automatic protection of the other channel.
If channel N is using protection and its error conditions are still above or equal to the restore limit but the protection channel now has worse conditions than channel N, an automatic restore of
channel N is performed.
If channel N is using protection and its error conditions have been evaluated to a level below the restore limit and the RPS configuration is revertive, an automatic restore of channel N is
performed. If non-revertive no action is taken.
If an automatic switch request is rejected (due to alignment timeout or equipment related problems), the operation is retried repeatedly until the request is acknowledged or cancelled. An
automatic switch request can be cancelled due to changes in error conditions, change in RPS configuration, manual switch requests or manual switch request.
InterFace Unit (IFU) overview
There are two versions of the IFU, supporting the following features:
FUBU6325B-T All configurations
The IFU is modular based and can be configured in different ways by means of plug-in units.
By clicking on a unit in the table below, possible slot positions are indicated in the figure above. In larger systems (more than 1 IFU), slot 1 to 5 can be used for interface units in all other IFU's than IFU
1. Legal slot positions for different configurations are defined by the Housekeeping wizard.
To learn more about the different units; click on the unit name in the table below.
Note! In IFU configurations using DXC Unit and one RIU, slot 4 and 5 can be used for a plug-in interface.
Note! Line Interface units operating with traffic rates > 155 Mb/s, must be placed inn IFU Slot 3.
One IFU is capable of handling radio systems for 1+0, 1+1, HSB and 2+0 channel arrangements. Larger systems are implemented by interconnecting IFUs using the expansion port on the back of the
IFU and a sub-rack. A total of 4 IFUs and 1 DXC Frame can be stacked and interconnected. Each IFU and DXC frame is 1U (Unit) high, and can be mounted in both an ETSI and a 19” rack solution as
well as standalone.
Supervisory Unit overview
The SU is used for configuration and alarm collecting from all the boards in a IFU system. The maximum IFU system may consist of 5 IFUs that can be controlled from one SU
located in an arbitrary IFU slot. The SU communicates with all boards and functions needing SU awareness.
There are four versions of the SU, supporting the following features:
Configurations with up to 2 IFUs (max 4 ODUs/XCVRs)
FKCN5551A-T Ethernet mapping into VC-4 (100 Mb/s)
Ethernet packet size up to 1536 byte (SU Ethernet)
Connectors
USB (FKCN5551A-T, FKCN5551B-T and FKCN5551C-T )
The USB device connector (USB type B connector) is used to open a text based console interface to the SU. This interface can be used for basic SU configuration, for instance
setting the IP address. The USB device interface complies with USB v1.1
Ethernet
The function of the two Ethernet ports; Port A (ETH1) and Port B (ETH2) is configuration dependent (FKCN5551A-T, FKCN5551B-T and FKCN5551C-T ).
FKCN5551D-T has two additional Ethernet ports, PortC (ETH3) and PortD (ETH4).
The Ethernet Port A (ETH1) is the SU management interface port. The Web server, FTP, SNMP and Telnet server are available from this port.
Port B is equivalent with Port A.
SU Ethernet enabled
The Ethernet Port A (ETH1) is the SU management interface port. The Web server, FTP, SNMP and Telnet server are available from this port.
The Ethernet Port B (ETH2...ETH4) is the physical interface for ethernet traffic over the link.
A layer-2 switch is activated, enabling MAC Switching and “In-band management”. In this mode, both Port A (ETH1) and Port B..C (ETH2..4) can be used for ethernet traffic
incl. management traffic.
The IFU has two Radio Interface Unit (RIU) slots. The RIU is used for interconnection between the IFU and Radio
The RIU is supplied with -48V DC via the power connector. -48V DC is then fed to the radio and to the IFU. Short circuit and over voltage protection for the radio is placed in the
RIU. The Short circuit and over voltage protection for the IFU is placed on the mother board.
All RIUs have XPIC functionality, i.e. XPIC between the two radio channels in the same IFU frame. RIU version E has in addition the capability of external XPIC, i.e XPIC
between any two radio channels (System independent).
