LESSON EXEMPLAR
I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. Describe the structure of the interior of the earth.
b. Name and identify the layers of the earth.
c. Explain the role of earthquake waves in studying the interior of the
earth.
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between faults
and earthquakes.
B. Performance The learners shall be able to: participate in decision making on where to build
Standards structures based on knowledge of the location of active faults in the community.
The learners shall be able to: make an emergency plan and prepare an
emergency kit for use at home and in school.
C. Most Essential
Learning Competencies
Explain how earthquake waves provide information about the interior of the
(MELC) earth.
D. Enabling
Competencies (If
available, write the attached Demonstrate how underwater earthquakes generate tsunamis.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction Learning Task No. 1: Using the given organizer, write the necessary
information to complete the concept about seismic waves. Do this
in your answer sheet.
B. Development Learning Task No.2: Prepare a basin with half-filled water and
stone. Drop a stone into the basin and observe what will happen.
Write your answers in your answer sheet.
C. Engagement Learning Task No. 3: Use a slinky wave in this activity and
answer the given questions.
(Note: You may use unused notebook metal spring as
alternative if slinky wave is not available at home)
Guide Questions:
1. Describe your observations of the coil and tape.
2. What kind of seismic wave does this slinky motion represent?
D. Assimilation Learning Task No. 4: Read the instructions found on the next
page. Answer the questions. Write your answers in your answer
sheet.
Material: 12-inch flexible plastic ruler
Procedure:
1. Hold the ruler horizontally at both ends. Bend the ruler.
Q1: Do you feel the ends of the ruler pushing against your hands?
4. While keeping a tight grip with your right hand, take away your
left hand
quickly.
Q4: What will happen to the ruler as you take away your left hand
quickly?
