LESSON EXEMPLAR

I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. Differentiate the epicenter and focus of an earthquake.
b. Describe an earthquake in terms of its magnitude and intensity.
c. Define and identify the different active faults and inactive faults in the
Philippines.
.

A. Content Standards  The learners demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between faults and
earthquakes.

B. Performance  The learners shall be able to: participate in decision making on where to build
Standards structures based on knowledge of the location of active faults in the community.
 The learners shall be able to: make an emergency plan and prepare an emergency
kit for use at home and in school.

C. Most Essential  Differentiate the:

Learning 1. Epicenter of an earthquake from its focus;
Competencies
(MELC) 2. Intensity of an earthquake from its magnitude;
3. Active and Inactive faults.

D. Enabling
Competencies (If
available, write the
attached enabling
competencies.)

IV. PROCEDURES

A. Introduction Learning Task No. 1: Read the article found on the next page
about the earthquake that happened in Luzon last 1990. Answer
the questions briefly. Write your answers in your answer sheet.

*The article is already given in the SCIENCE Pivot Module.

Guide Questions: 1.
1. Where is the epicenter of the earthquake?
2. How many individuals are affected by the earthquakes?
3. Discuss how devastating a 7.7- magnitude earthquake is.
4. When an earthquake occurs, where would shaking be greater?
Near the epicenter or away from the epicenter?
5. Where would damage be more? Near the epicenter or away from
the epicenter?
6. Where would the intensity be higher? Near to the epicenter or
away from the epicenter?
B. Development Learning Task No.2: Match the Richter magnitude indicated in
column A with the earthquake effect found in column B. Write your
answer on the space provided.
A B

_____ 1.) 7 A. Lead to a lot of damage

_____ 2.) 5 B. Widespread destruction
_____ 3.) 2 C. Felt little by people
_____ 4.) 4 D. Felt by most people
_____ 5.) 8 up E. Caused severe damage
_____6.) 6 F. May not be felt
_____ 7.) 3 G. Furniture moves
C. Engagement
Learning Task No. 3:

Read each question carefully. Choose the letter of the

correct answer. Write your answers in your answer sheet.

C. Intensity D. Magnitude
2. What point on the earth’s surface is directly above the focus?
A. Epicenter B. Fault
C. Intensity D. Magnitude
3. Which agency of the government in the Philippines is monitoring the
movement
of the earth crust?
A. DENR B. DOST
C. PAGASA D. PHIVOLCS
4. It is a sudden movement of the earth's crust caused by the release of
stress accumulated along geologic faults or by volcanic activity:
A. Earthquake B. Flood
C. Typhoon D. Tsunami
5. What does the illustration shows?
A. Epicenter B. Fault
C. Focus D. Magnitude

D. Assimilation Learning Task No. 4: List down five (5) things to do before, during
and after an earthquake. Do this in your answer sheet.
