TRANSDUCER CONFIGURATION:

 To use two identical transducers

 To reduce or even totally eliminate certain
restrictions associated with individual
transducers

1) Balanced transducer configuration

2) Negative feedback configuration

BALANCED TRANSDUCER CONFIGURATION:

 A widespread method

 The output y is

 f(x) can be expressed with Taylor expansion

 Then

NEGATIVE FEEDBACK CONFIGURATION:

 To convert an input signal x into an electrical
output signal y

 T1 performs the desired conversion of x into y

and T2 performs the reverse conversion.
 Amplifier to increase loop gain

RESISTIVE DISPLACEMENT TRANSDUCERS:

STRAIN GAUGES
 Potentiometric transducer
 Usually potentiometers are wire-wound to achieve
a better accuracy, temperature coefficient etc…
 They have the limitation of finite resolution
 Above limitation is overcome by using metal film
potentiometers.
 Potentiometric transducers have the disadvantage
of mechanical wear and chemical corrosion, which
changes the transfer characteristic over the life
time of transducer.

RESISTIVE DISPLACEMENT TRANSDUCERS:

STRAIN GAUGES
 The electrical resistance of a conductor depends
on the dimensions of the conductor.
 If the conductor is mechanically strained or
compressed, the resistance changes.
R=R(A, l, ρ)
 R=resistance
 A=cross sectional area of the conductor
 l=length of the conductor
 ρ=resistivity

INDUCTIVE DISPLACEMENT TRANSDUCER:

 Vary the self inductance of a coil as a function
of displacement and also the mutual
inductance between two coils as a function of
the displacement.
 The inductance of a coil is varied by the
effective number of turns.
 Can also be varied by magnetic resistance
(reluctance) of the yoke by means of an air gap
of variable width.
