LEARNING AREA: MATH 3

COMPETENCY: Arranges dissimilar fractions

DAY
- Arranges dissimilar fractions in increasing or decreasing order. (Modelling
Objective:
method)
- Grade 3 Home Learning Resource Kit for Early Numeracy, pages 169-189
- Grade 3 MATH TG - Lesson 61, pages 238-244
Materials/
- Grade 3 MATH LM – Lesson 61, pages 233-237
References
- Flash cards, diagrams, Fraction Chart, Laptop (PowerPoint presentation),
activity sheets
Lesson Flow
- Have a review on comparing fractions.
REVIEW  Using models of fractions, have a drill with comparing dissimilar
fractions .
- Present a word problem.
- Let the pupils read the word problem
Nagtungo si Rachel at ang kanyang nanay sa
palengke. Tinulungan nya ang kanyang nanay bumili ng
ACTIVATE
mga sumusunod:
3/4 kilo ng mangga 1/2 kilo ng
kalamansi

IMMERSE - Discuss and analyze the problem.

Concrete:
- Let the pupils feel like Rachel by showing them the
things Rachel and her mom bought in the market.
- Ask:
 Do you also go with your mother in the market to buy food?
 How many items did they buy in the market?
 Do you think each of the things they bought have the same weight?
 If we are going to arrange the ingredients from lightest to heaviest,
which should come first? Second? Third? Fourth? Why?
Pictorial:
- Use the same word problem.
- Use the models to represent the weight of each ingredient.
- Show in class the representation (models) of the ingredients bought.

Ask: From the models which is the lightest? The heaviest?

How will you arrange the fractions from lightest to heaviest?
heaviest to lightest?

3/4 kilo 1/2 kilo

1/8 kilo 1/4 kilo
mango kalamansi ginger onion

Do:Learners will arrange the fraction drawings from lightest to heaviest.

Learners will arrange the fraction drawings from heaviest to lightest.

Abstract:
- Use the same word problem.
- Ask:
 How many items did Rachel and her mom buy in the market?
 Answer: 4
 Are the weight of the items the same?
 Answer: No
 What is the arrangement of the items if the weight is increasing?
 Answer: ginger, onion, calamansi, mango
 What is the arrangment of the items if the weight is decreasing?
 Answer: mango, calamansi, onion, ginger

What do you notice of the models if they are all whole?

 They have the same shape and size.

Discuss:
- Show the fractions of the items bought.
3/4 1/2 1/8 1/4
- Look at the fractions, they have different denominators, these fractions
are called dissimilar. What we used in arranging them is called model
or diagram method.

Modelling is one way to arrange fractions. When there is a visual

representation you can easily determine the value of each fraction.
Thus, arranging the fractions in increasing/ascending (least to
greatest) or decreasing/descending order ( greatest to least) will be
easier for you.
When we use the model or diagram method in arranging the
value of the fractions the wholes should be of the same shape and
size.
- Let the pupils perform activities.
 Do: Set the norms in having an activity.

 Activity 1: (BOARD WORK ACTIVITY)

Let the pupils answer the following using models or diagrams.
Label the fraction shown by the models and then
a. arrange in increasing order; and
b. arrange in decreasing order.

1.

_______ ______ _______

a.

b.

2.

_______ ______ _______

a.

b.

3.

_______ ______ _______

a.

b.
 Activity 2: (GROUP WORK ACTIVITY)
 Divide the class into 3 groups.

Group 1. – Guided by the fraction strips chart, arrange the following fractions in
increasing or ascending order.

a.
b.
Group 2 – Guided by the fraction strips chart, draw the following fractions inside
the box and arrange in decreasing or descending order.

Group 3 – Guided by the fraction strips chart, name the fractions and arrange in
increasing or ascending order.
