This manual is published as a guide for the normal operation of your National Oilwell Varco
equipment. Because of many factors which contribute to the function or malfunction of this
machinery, and not having complete knowledge of each factor or combination of factors, we
cannot detail all facets of this subject. We must therefore confine the scope of this presentation
and when situations encountered are not fully encompassed by complete, understandable
instructions, these situations must be referred to the manufacturer.
The dimensions of and tolerances used in the construction of the components illustrated in
this publication are those desirable for the most efficient operations of the equipment. When
components become worn or when new parts are introduced into a worn unit, it may not be
possible or economically feasible to reestablish such strict alignment and correct all dimensional
deviations.
The pictures, photographs, charts, diagrams, drawings, verbal contents ad specifications are
not to be construed as giving rise to any warranty on the part of National Oilwell Varco. National
Oilwell Varco makes no warranty, either expressed or implied beyond that which is stipulated in
the purchase contract.
DO NOT PROCEED WITH INSTALLATION UNTIL THE INSTALLER HAS READ THE
MANUAL IN ITS ENTIRETY.

Appropriate maintenance procedures are essential for the reliable
operation of the rotary swivel or top drive and the safety of the rig
crew. This manual is not intended to replace the OEM installation,
care and operation manual that is provided by the manufacturer.
You should keep the OEM ICO manual close at hand when
performing maintenance or inspection on the rotary swivel or top
drive.

5
Disassembly
Lay cartridge on its side.
Using a flathead screwdriver
remove o-ring from groove in the
lower washpipe packing adapter
ring. Discard used o-ring.
6
Lower washpipe cartridge onto the
assembly fixture rotating slightly
until the pins on the fixture lock
into holes in the lower washpipe
adapter ring .
7
Using a flat head screwdriver
remove steel snap ring from
groove at the top of the washpipe.
8
Note: Before proceeding further with
disassembly of the cartridge the
assembly fixture must be securely
fastened to the work table. Ideally it
should be bolted down through the
four predrilled holes in the fixture.
9
Place the upper adapter
ring spanner into upper
washpipe cartridge nut.
10
Insert one spanner bar into
holes on upper adapter ring
spanner and insert the other
into the holes in the upper
washpipe cartridge nut.
Holding the upper washpipe
cartridge nut still turn the
upper adapter ring spanner to
the left to loosen the upper
adapter ring.
11
Insert one of the spanner
bars into holes on upper
washpipe cartridge nut.
Turn to the left until lower
washpipe packing adapter
ring threads break loose.
12
After removing upper
washpipe cartridge nut turn
upper packing adapter ring
to the left until it is
completely unthreaded from
upper washpipe cartridge
nut.
13
Now remove the washpipe
from the washpipe cartridge
gland and set it on the work
table.
14
After removing the grease
fitting from the washpipe
cartridge turn the cartridge
back to an upright position
and lift up on the handles
then shake the cartridge with
a quick down then stop
motion. The upper washpipe
packing spacer ring should
drop out of the cartridge.
15
Inspect washpipe OD surface
for wear. If the surface is
excessively worn, rough or
otherwise interrupted in the
packing sealing area replace
washpipe.
16
Assembly:
Using a shop rag clean all
surfaces of the upper
washpipe packing adapter
ring, upper washpipe
packing spacer ring, two
washpipe packing spacer
rings and lower washpipe
packing adapter ring.
17
Using hand pressure only press
washpipe packing rings lip side
down into the upper adapter
ring, upper spacer ring, two
spacer rings and lower adapter
ring.
18
Turn the lower washpipe
packing spacer ring to line up
the threaded hole for the grease
fitting with the hole in the
washpipe cartridge gland.
19
One at a time, insert the two
washpipe packing spacers (with
the packing ring facing down)
into the cartridge gland.
20
Turn spanner tool to the right
until lower washpipe adapter
ring is hand tight.
21
Place washpipe into gland
assembly with grooved end up
and slide down through the
washpipe packing rings till it
bottoms out in the assembly
fixture.
22
Slide upper washpipe cartridge
nut down over the washpipe.
Take care to ensure washpipe
does not cut the packing ring.
23
Place one spanner bar into the
spanner tool and one into the
upper washpipe cartridge nut.
While holding the upper
washpipe cartridge nut in place,
use the upper spanner bar to
turn the spanner tool to the
right until the upper washpipe
packing adapter is tight.
24
Liberally grease new o-ring
before installing in groove in
upper washpipe packing
adapter ring.
25
The washpipe holding ring
should sit down in the washpipe
slots so the top of the ring is
almost flush with the top of the
washpipe.
26
Coat o-ring counter bore in the
washpipe holding ring liberally
with grease.
27
Place cartridge assembly on its
side on work table. Liberally
grease o-ring groove in lower
washpipe packing adapter ring.
28
Grasp washpipe cartridge
assembly by the lifting handles
and lift off of work table.
29
Once replacement cartridge has
been lifted up to swivel, remove
spanner bar from saddle on
hanger. The spanner bar is
attached to the hanger by
means of a six foot lanyard to
prevent it from falling to the rig
floor if dropped.
30
Turn lower washpipe cartridge
nut to the left by hand until it is
completely unthreaded from
the quill threads.
Before proceeding lift up on
lower cartridge nut and slide
Canrig DT12826 Washpipe
Retainer Tool between
washpipe and quill.
31
Grasp the used washpipe
cartridge assembly by the
lifting handles and remove from
the swivel.
32
Clean and inspect quill threads
then coat with pipe compound
or anti- seize compound.
33
Place new washpipe cartridge
assembly into swivel and set it
down on the stem.
34
Insert spanner bar into holes on
upper washpipe cartridge nut
and turn to the left getting nut
as tight as possible on the
gooseneck.
35
Start Up:
Rotate the swivel stem at approximately 50 RPM
for 1 minute without mud pumps.
Turn on the mud pumps and check for leaks. If
leaks occur disassemble and repeat all previous
steps.
If leaks continue see Swivel or Top Drive service
manual for inspection of alignment and runout of
mating parts.
Lubrication Schedule:
Pack the cartridge gland to excess (20-25 pumps)
with multipurpose lithium-based or high
temperature moly-based grease twice daily or
once a tour (do not mix lubricants).
After lubricating rotate swivel stem at
approximately 50 RPM for 1 minute before
turning on mud pumps.
Note: Regular greasing will increase packing seal
and washpipe life.
