3. MOMENT OF A FORCE

Magnitude of the moment of a force about an axis which is perpendicular to a plane containing the line
of action of the force.

VARIGNON’S THEOREM

Varignon’s Theorem states that the moment of a force is equivalent to the sum of the moments of its
components.

Assume Counter Clockwise as positive (+)

Moment Mo = F d

Moment Mo = Fx (Y) + Fy (X)

Where: Fx is the horizontal component of the Force F

Fy is the vertical component of the Force F

X is the horizontal distance from the force to the origin y axis

Y is the vertical distance from the force to origin x axis

Solution:

Assume Clockwise Direction as Positive (+) and Counter Clockwise Direction as Negative (-).

1. Moment at Point A

M A = 5KN (2m) + 10KN (2m + 3m)

M A = 5KN (2m) + 10KN (5m)

M A = 10KN.m + 50KN.m

M A = 60KN.m (Clockwise Direction)

2. Moment at Point B

M B = 5KN (0) + 10KN (3m)

M B = 5KN (0) + 10KN (3m)

M B = 0 + 30KN.m

M B = 30KN.m (Clockwise Direction)

3. Moment at Point C

M C = -5KN (3m)

M C = -15KN.m (Counter Clockwise Direction)

4. Moment at Point D

M D = (-10KN) (4m) + (-5KN) (4m + 3m)

M D = (- 40KN.m) + (-5KN) (7m)

M D = (- 40KN.m) + (- 35KN.m)

M D = - 75KN.m (Counter Clockwise Direction)

Solution:

Assume Clockwise Direction as Positive (+) and Counter Clockwise Direction as Negative (-).

1. Moment at Point A R = 5N/m (3m) = 15N

2. Moment at Point B

M B = 15N (1.5m)

M B = 22.5 N.m (Clockwise Direction)

3. Moment at Point C

M C = (- 15N) (1.5m)

M C = - 22.5 N.m (Counter Clockwise Direction)

4. Moment at Point D

M D = (- 15N) (1.5m + 3m) = ( - 15N) (4.5m)

M D = - 67.5 N.m (Counter Clockwise Direction)
