NXAIR Arc-Vented Switchgear
History
ANSI metal-clad switchgear has remained
virtually unchanged for the past 20 years.
Siemens saw the need for a new kind of
switchgear that takes advantage of the
latest technologies available today. So,
we asked our American customers what
they wanted, and we designed the
NXAIR P based on their input.
Arc-Vented
The NXAIR P design has been tested
to meet the Type 2 requirements of
ANSI/ IEEE C37.20.7 “Guide For
Testing Medium-Voltage Metal Enclosed
Switchgear for Internal Arcing Faults”
for the ANSI market and the IEC 60298.
The C37.20.7 test guide is intended to
replace the Canadian EEMAC G14-1
1987 test guide, which is no longer
supported following the dissolution of
EEMAC. Non-arc-vented equipment can
also be provided.
Global Compliance
NXAIR P can be configured to meet all
applicable requirements for the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) and
the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC). It is also available

with third-party listings to CSA (cUL) or

market.
Description of Phenomena
During an arcing fault, a significant amount
of energy is released due to the voltage
drop in the arc. This energy is manifested
in the form of heat. Arc temperatures in
excess of 20,000 degrees K are possible
and materials in the immediate vicinity of Figure 3 Side View of Venting System
the arc are readily vaporized. The result of
Switchgear

this heating and vaporization of materials

is a rapid pressure build up in the
compartment. As a result, the panels and
doors of the switchgear will experience
multi-ton forces. The NXAIR P is designed
13

to withstand this rapid pressure rise and to

vent the overpressure in a controlled
manner
Key Features
The NXAIR P has a number of features to
meet the arc-vented requirements.
Internal compartments are channeled to a
top mounted pressure relief channel (See
Figure 3). This channel allows the pressure
to be absorbed in the pressure relief
channel, which extends over multiple
switchgear sections, and to be vented
through an outlet over one of the units.
Additionally, the top venting is selectable
from unit to unit. This allows the user to
vent through the top at an appropriate
point away from overhead obstructions,
such as cable trays or bus duct. Arc-
venting installations require 10” (250mm)
of clearance above the equipment in the
area of the vent outlet.
The NXAIR P utilizes a lift and lock door
design in the front of the circuit breaker
compartment. Unlike bolted door designs,
the lift/lock design is quick and easy to
operate. The door must be closed to rack

Circuit Breaker
Figure 4 Interrupter
Siemens has been manufacturing medium
voltage vacuum circuit breakers for over
40 years and currently has more than
400,000 vacuum circuit breakers in service Fixed Stem
worldwide. The 3AK1 is the latest in a
long heritage of Siemens circuit breakers, Ceramic Insulator
which have their heritage in the 3AF circuit
breaker introduced in 1976. The NXAIR P Internal Arc Shield
uses the 3AK1 circuit breaker, a variant of
the tried and true 3AH circuit breaker. The
Fixed Contact
stored energy operator and all manual
controls are located on the front of the
Chrome-Copper Contacts
3AK1 breaker (See Figure 5).
Interrupters
Moving Contact
At the heart of any medium voltage circuit
breaker are the vacuum interrupters.
Siemens interrupters use chrome-copper
contact material, which keeps the Metal Bellows
chopping currents to 5 amperes or less
and thereby keeps overvoltages to a
minimum. For interrupting ratings up to
40kA, radial magnetic field contacts are Guide
used to force high current (>10kA) arcs to Movable Stem
rotate rapidly around the contact surfaces
to reduce contact erosion (See Figure 4).
For interrupting ratings over 40kA, axial
magnetic field contacts force the arc to
remain diffuse, spreading arcing across
the entire contact surface for long life. The
contact-wear indicator is readily accessible

A typical automatic transfer scheme
works in the following manner. When the
scheme is in automatic mode, loss of
source at one incoming main initiates
automatic transfer. The scheme opens the
main breaker, then closes the tie breaker.
